Earth Hour candle sets Mississauga townhouse ablaze
The National Post ^ | March 30, 2009, 5:13 P | Jeff Labine, National Pos

A Mississauga family who tried to light a candle for Earth Hour nearly burned their Meadowvale townhouse down.

Afshan Khalid, 46, said her 8-year-old daughter tried to light a candle before Earth Hour started at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

“She was lighting up the candle and we thought it didn’t light up or the match fell somewhere that we didn’t notice and then we left,” said Ms. Khalid. The family was going to see friends and when getting ready, they lighted scented candles so they could see.

While they were gone, Ms. Khalid’s son Omar, 19, came home at 9:30 with a friend, saw smoke and called 911.

“The upper floor is damaged. The central part is all burnt out, smoke damage to all the bedrooms,” said Ms. Khalid.

Idiots. Earth Hour indeed, their candle mishap will sour the kids on any more weak overtures to liberalism.

“Who leaves an open flame burning in an empty house?”

I had a girlfriend who did this. I refused to leave anything at her house, including me in the end...lol.

The Competitive Enterprise Institute, in the link below, offers a short video in celebration of Human Achievement, a concept they are promoting to counter the leftist-ecotard-dimwits' Earth Hour (very appropriately symbolized by "lights out" as in the superstitious Dark Ages).

Celebrate Human Achievement Hour,

Stupidity is forever, ignorance can be fixed. These folks are simply, plainly stupid.

Oh, I forgot they are liberals. Sorry for the redundant comment.

I’m trying to figure out what they planned to contribute to reducing pollution during “Earth Hour” by having a candle lit where they were not. Would they have left lights on all over the place normally? Of course, the ultimate irony is that the ensuing fire dumped a lot of smoke into the air.

He can’t afford them, his electric bill is too high because he didn’t and doesn’t conserve.

NEVER leave anyplace with a lighted candle burning. So much for earth day. Think that’s why we use electricity today to see and move about??? Candles are fun yes in their right places when everyone is home. But for seeing your way around when we have perfectly good electricity? Here someone uses a candle while gore burns his lights outside his own home. When will people learn?????????? It’s all a do as I SAY and not do as I DO!!!

I applaud the family for trying to do their part but...they should do their part in other ways and not sacrifice their comfort just to be part of something stupid. We kept our lights on. Didn’t burn any extra...just kept on what we normally keep on. Was glad too since it was reported that gore had his on. See what happens? Why can’t the people who jump into this kind of stuff stop and realize that it is THEM that will do without. Not those who think up these ridiculous ideas. Thank God no one was injured or worse.

What are the costs of the carbon offset for the cndles?

What are the costs for the carbon offset for the fire?

What are the costs for the carbon offset for the fuel used to get there by the fire department?

What are the costs for the carbon offset for the increased use of oxygen and resulting exhaling of carbon dioxide when the fire fighters had to lug heavy hoses to put our the fire?

What are the carbon offsets for the manufacture of additional materials to have the home built?

I could go on and on...

The sad thing is, that candle, and the match used to light it, probably had a bigger carbon footprint than the light, or lights it replaced (even before burning down the house).

Of course, the ultimate irony is that the ensuing fire dumped a lot of smoke into the air.

Don't forget the many gallons of diesel fuel and mass amounts of exhaust from all of the fire/rescue autos that likely responded. Bunch of morons.
