President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle arrived in Britain last night to bring some glamour to the G20 summit of world leaders. The Presidential plane, Air Force One, touched down at Stansted just before 8pm for Mr Obama's first official visit to Europe. A crowd of well-wishers, many waving U.S. flags, had gathered in the cold to welcome the couple
Hand in hand, they waved from the steps of the Boeing 747, the First Lady wearing a bright yellow dress and the President in a dark suit and spotted tie.
They were greeted by Chancellor Alistair Darling - and tight security - before travelling on to London
Selected members of the President's 500-strong entourage were airlifted to London in American military Chinook helicopters. Later today Mr Obama will go to Buckingham Palace for a real British welcome - a cup of tea. He will be offered it at a meeting with the Queen and Prince Philip in their private apartments
The 'getting to know you' session - which will probably last about 25 minutes - is something of a break with protocol because visiting heads of state normally meet the monarch only if they are on an official state visit, whereas Mr Obama will be in town as one of a number of leaders. After the meeting, the couple will be taken to a reception to welcome the heads of state of the G20 and other nations attending. Most senior members of the Royal Family...
