Zeituni Onyango, President Barack Obama's aunt, is seeking asylum in the United States for a second time.
Onyango, 56, is the half-sister of Obama's late father. She moved to the United States in 2000 and applied for and failed to win asylum once before, in 2004. She was ordered deported but continues to live in public housing in Boston.
An initial hearing on Onyango's case is scheduled for Wednesday in U.S. Immigration Court in Boston.
She is asking to be reconsidered for asylum under a provision that allows denied claims to be reheard if applicants can show something has changed to make them eligible.
Obama has said he didn't know his aunt was living here illegally and believes laws covering the situation should be followed.
"The president believes that the case should run its ordinary course, and neither he nor his representatives have had any involvement," spokesman Ben LaBolt said last week.
Onyango was mentioned in Obama's memoir, "Dreams from My Father," and described meeting her during a 1988 trip to Kenya.
NO to asylum!
While we’re at it, could we deport her nephew, as well?
What part of NO and get the hell out don't you understand?
It feels like something’s missing in this story.
More evidence of divided loyalty.
I fault his mores even here. Were he a man with an ordered sense of obligations, he’d help her out and answer his critics by saying she’s family and he’s in position to pressure the system. He can’t even take a firm stand when it comes to relatives.
Hah, how’s that for an argument against him?
And she’ll get it too unfortunately.
More evidence of hypocrisy.
Why not just refuse him reentry into the country without a birth certificate?
OK, maybe its not legal and all, but I feel we should let the old lady stay. It would be heartless to deport the poor woman. Obama should give her a job of some sort or a stipend so she can survive. Maybe she can clean the offices at the State department or babysit the presidents daughters. If he hangs this relative out to dry I will lose all the respect I had (and it wasn’t much) for the man.
“Why not just refuse him reentry into the country without a birth certificate? “
That works!
I really don’t expect all those possible witnesses to his birth to be brought in unless it is to buy their silence.
Gee, tough call. Think they’ll let her stay? I’m thinkin’ maybe.
Ain't that the truth.....here in MA if you receive medicaid or food stamps you can get a FREE phone, free minutes, all paid for by the rest of us......unfreakinbelievable..............
If she really is his aunt, he could have found a way to sponsor her in legally, as a hardship case. Of course, that would have involved signing a paper promising to be financially responsible for her so that she would not become a public charge, which apparently she has. That is why I suspect he didn’t do anything for her in the first place. Ditto his brother.
I agree. He’ll take money out of our pockets before he’ll take a nickel out of his own. And he supposedly cares about the less fortunate.
Unbelievable.
Hmmm...
First Lady...
First Kids...
First Dog...
First Illegal Alien...
Ping!
Put her on a boat for Kenya with 500 miles of fuel!!!
