Fate of Hummer brand is hours away
March 30th, 2009 Matt Degen
In a day in which weve seen more than enough upheaval in Detroit, there comes this bit of news: The fate of GMs Hummer brand is to be decided by Tuesday, and things arent exactly looking rosy.
According to an AP report, General Motors must decide by the end of the first quarter thats Tuesday whether to sell the brand or let it die.
GM is reportedly still talking to buyers for the brand that made military-derived four-by-fours a common sight in Orange County, but no official word has been made.
According to APs report, it is possible that a Chinese automaker will buy the niche marquee.
The Associated Press reports: The automaker has told dealers it will make an announcement about the brands future on Tuesday, but until then, GM will say only that its still negotiating with some interested parties.
We are cautiously optimistic, about a sale, GM spokesman Nick Richards told AP, adding that the companies with which GM is talking are from all different parts of the world.
With GM on life support via federal bailout money and a push toward greener, more fuel-effecient vehicles, its no surprise the automaker wants to shed the Hummer brand, which has been on sale since June.

That is not what they were made for. They were made to capture buyers by being the best for the price. You can't buy a “Rover or a Land Bruiser” as cheap as an H3 and most assuredly an H3. The “Rover or a Land Bruiser” are not as affordable to most buyers nor are the as inexpensive to maintain as either HUMMER.
When selling it is important to know your market. Could it be you are a snob? Would you deny the average buyer a very capable vehicle for FAR less than the buyer could afford.
A “Rover or a Land Bruiser” can't do what an M1 can either, but the average person would not want to buy one. Get realistic. Learn about marketing. The “best” 4X4 can always be surpassed by something else.
But can the most buyers be convinced to afford that vehicle or even want to buy it? So that “best” may not be the maximum volume you should sell.
The HUMMER’s were for many more than an “Rover or a Land Bruiser”. That is smart marketing.

Nobody buys a new 4 wheeler for off road use .. you buy used .. I can go on Manheim and find low mileage Land Rover Disco’s for $3k-$6k all day... when sold new they are pretty much all for show ,, it’s been that way for at least 25 years or so .. when they started getting trendy.
I have gone more places offroad in a piss yellow 4 door AMC Matador CAR than most Hummers ever will...
