How did they know he was Polynesian....was he wearing a grass skirt along with his beanie and tee shirt?

There is a very large Polynesian population in Utah because the LDS church began sending missionaries to Hawaii, Samoa and Tonga in the mid 19th century. The assumption makes sense given the context.
