Courting Disaster in South Carolina [NYT attacks Mark Sanford]
The New York Times ^ | 2009-03-30

Now that Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina has polished his credentials with the Republican right by recklessly rejecting $700 million in federal education stimulus money, we keep hoping he will change his mind and put the needs of his recession-ravaged state ahead of his political ambitions.

It will be up to more responsible political leaders to act if Mr. Sanford sticks by his disastrous choice, which would drive an already depressed state economy deeper into a hole and place even more South Carolinians at risk of losing their homes.

You know, when it comes to budgets, one would think that the destitute state of the NYT would mean they have no credibility whatsoever. Hey NYT, WHAT FRIGGIN’ BUSINESS IS IT OF YOURS? You’re a regional, not a national paper anymore. You’re a dying man with a hole in his gut, pointing out my splinter. Just roll over and croak already, save us a perfectly useful shotgun shell.

I’m tempted to tell y’all at the NYT to STFU, but nobody pays much attention to you fools down here in the South. (No, Miami ain’t in the South no more.)

When your own state is in the hole by about $15BILLION DOLLARS it’s easy to poke fun at other people.

I think the NYTs has more problems to worry about than Mark Sanford. Maybe they should start worrying about telling the truth and stop trashing every Republican they disagree with.

It's awfully sweet of the New York Times to be so concerned about South Carolina. </sarcasm>

Funny how they don’t seem to mention that the federal money comes with cables attached that will last LOOOOONG after the money is gone.
The state governments that accepted the “stimulus” are either desperate or run by fools.

The NYT is not in the position to offer anybody any kind of advise on budgets. They need to clean up their own mess before they start trying to butt into the business of a state.

To be fair, Mark Hussein Sanford has also polished his credentials with Algore global warming extremists, and socialists who, like MHS, also want Obama to succeed.

The NYT is right! It is too bad that South Carolina doesn't have a good governor like Patterson or Corzine!
(Is a sarcasm tag really necessary here?)

This is why it does no good to try to court the left, as Mark Hussein Sanford has tried to do. He's tried to show he's a moderate on global warming, tried to show he's not one of the right-wing extremists who want Obama to fail-- and what does he get for his efforts to court these people? They still paint him as a conservative extremist.

It's John McCain all over again. Republicans who think they can court the left. YOU CAN'T. Stop trying.

What the NYT doesn’t understand is that most of the people of South Carolina will see that article as a badge of honor for the governor!

That just proves that he’s doing what he was elected to do…piss off liberals!!!

It will be up to more responsible political leaders to act if Mr. Sanford sticks by his disastrous choice

I'd like for the NYT to very carefully and specifically define what they mean by this statement. Is this intended to mean that other "more responsible political leaders" should depose Mr. Sanford? Impeach him? Overstep their bounds and impinge on Mr. Sanford's rightful duties? Are they advocating the overthrow of the properly elected government of South Carolina, or perhaps just the Executive branch? Just what exactly does the editorial board of the NYT mean by this vaguely threatening statement?

It’s a “code word” for the South Carolina General Assembly and Congressional delegation to end-run around Governor Sanford and take the money anyway. And despite Republican domination, the General Assembly may well try it. Sanford has been slamming heads with them for seven years now trying to rein in spending, with mixed success. The executive branch in the SC state government has less power than in other states; the state legislature is where the real power is. And they want their pork, badly.

To give you one indication—state legislators for a particular county or group of counties can not only interfere with executive decision involving those counties, they can interfere with LOCAL government in those counties. “Home rule” of local governments was only codified into SC law less than forty years ago.
