Being a manipulative lying weasel appears to be one of the foremost qualifications required to be a politician, so why should anyone be surprised? It is wise not to trust any politician, and to limit their time in office so that they can't become entrenched and do harm. One of the most destructive things the media has done in this country is contributing to the transformation of politicians into celebrities. They shouldn't ever be thought of as ‘above’ the public, but rather should be thought of as servants of the public.
The public should get to vote every year on whether or not public officials have earned their salary that year. If not, they shouldn't get paid. They should also be required to file quarterly, or at least semi-annual reports on what they've done, so that we can accurately assess if they are doing their job or not. They should be afraid of us. I couldn't be more serious about that.
