Florida Gov’t Cancels Tea Party Fearing ‘Too Many Attendees’
Stop the ACLU ^ | 29 March 09 | Warnter Todd Huston

Remember this report from our nation’s history?

CNN (Continental News Network) Boston, 1773: The city of Boston canceled a proposed protest over tea taxes today, citing the fear that too many people dressed as Indians would be gathered near the wharves. Organizers expressed sadness over the cancellation, but meekly returned to their homes fearful of upsetting the officers of the Crown. Taxmen breathed a sigh of relief as the tar and feathers were put away not to be used this day.

You don’t remember that pre-revolutionary history? I should say you shouldn’t, because it didn’t happen. But flash forward a few hundred years and you’ll find it is happening today in Cape Coral, Florida where city officials canceled a tax day tea party gathering because they “feel too many people could show-up.”

Since the whole purpose of a "TEA PARTY" is to protest government interference in our lives, getting a permit for one defeats the whole purpose of it.

We should not have to ask permission to assemble ourselves peaceably.

If we do, then that is one more thing that needs to be protested at the tea parties.

Party on!

Every cause must have their John Brown’s...

It is a shame that they pull crap like this because it only incites people to a different level.

It would be better to settle this civilly...

How plain can it be? --

United States Constitution

Bill of Rights

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

A tax protest scheduled for 5 p.m. April 1 in Jaycee Park has been canceled.

Organizer Lynn Rosko said she was informed events of more than 500 people require permits, insurance and other provisions, possibly costing thousands. Rosko said she had not known of the requirements or estimated a crowd exceeding 500 when she first planned the event.

“In light of these requirements,” Rosko said, “it is with regret that I will no longer be sponsoring/organizing any gathering of people at any city park or facility for a Tea Party on April 1.”

Rosko encouraged residents to attend another gathering at 5 p.m. April 15 at Centennial Park in Fort Myers.

I think people will still show up, maybe even more now.

My previous post only applied to congress, but the state of Mass. has an old history allowing freedom of assembly.

http://www.learningtogive.org/papers/paper57.html

In 1776, Pennsylvania’s declaration of rights guaranteed peaceable assembly, being the first state to recognize this right. Interestingly, in 1670, William Penn, the founder of the colony, was arrested on Gracechurch Street, London, for giving a sermon to a group of Quakers in the street in front of his church. London officials had locked the hall and forbidden Penn “to preach in any building” so he took his sermon to the streets. “He was charged with unlawful, tumultuous assembly that disturbed the king’s peace. The judge in the case tried to force the jury to return a verdict of guilty for William Penn…

This was a bitter memory for those who believed in religious freedom and the right for people to assemble peacefully” (FACT). Later declarations of rights gave citizens of other states the right to peaceful assembly - North Carolina (1776), Massachusetts (1790), and New Hampshire (1784).

This is the reason we are having our tea party on private property. Any gathering with amplified sound requires a permit.
