South Korea's Kim wins figure skating gold
by Greg Heakes Sat Mar 28, 11:42 pm ET
LOS ANGELES (AFP) South Korea's Kim Yu-Na took the gold at the World Figure Skating Championships with an overwhelming victory in the free skate.
Canada's Joannie Rochette won the silver medal while Miki Ando of Japan got the bronze in front of a near sellout crowd at Staples Center arena.
"To perform this well at the World Championships was my dream," said Kim, who earned 45,000 dollars in prize money. "I did it here and it is just amazing."
Skating brilliantly to Rimski-Korsakov's Sheherazade, Kim became the first Korean to win at the World Championships, posting a score of 207.71, the best ever by a woman.
She now has a gold to go with two bronze medals she won in 2007 and 2008.
The World Championship victory establishes her gold medal favourite for the Winter Olympics at Vancouver in 11 months.

Congratulations to South Korea’s Kim Yu-Na!
There’s a new system...google it for details...points for certain jumps and certain times....deductions for mistakes. A fairer way to judge, not just opinion.
She was excellent, many difficult jumps at the end of the program which gave her extra points.
...Also google the male winner. They showed his “dance” at the end of the show. Sorry I didn’t catch his name, but he was excellent also. Very strong, masculine but graceful...a powerful skate that had the audience on their feet at the end.
More beauty, elegance, grace...here...

In other news, North Korea's Kim won the North Korean figure skating gold medal with a perfect scores from every single judge.
Beautiful skater. She has long graceful arms
The male skater was Evan Lysacek and he skated for America. I watched him at the end of the ladies’ competition and was amazed at the speed of his spins during jumps. He was wonderful.
Kim was unbelievable. Her coach is Brian Orser, a former Canadian skater who always just missed gold.
I have followed figure skating for many years, but recently lost interest because there just weren’t any skaters who excited me. Both Kim and Evan are definitely skaters to watch and enjoy.
