Therefore, I urge you to stock up on a lifetime supply right now. About $200.00 at Walmart should do the trick, as they're practically giving them away. And I'm talking about brand name bulbs like GE. Buy a mixture of 100, 75, and 60 watt bulbs, with a few 40 watts.
And if you really want to make a killing in a few years, set yourself up a business and buy a couple of warehouses worth wholesale.
My experience with compact fluorescent has been dismal. I could live with the slow warmup, though I detest the color. But the thing that makes them intolerable is that they burn out quicker than the cheapie incandescents, even though they cost more.
Plus, all of the EnergyGuide and EnergyStar ratings are a complete scam as they do not take into account the cost to manufacture and dispose of an item. For example, modern refrigerators will not last more than 15 years no matter how much money you waste on fancy stainless steel exteriors and the like, because the compressors are deliberately undersized to save energy and therefore run almost constantly. Of course they quickly burn out, and the cost to replace one is almost as much as a new refrigerator, so you end up tossing your refrigerator and buying a new one every 15 years. Energy ratings need to be based on the energy cost to build, operate, and dispose of an item over its lifetime in order to actually be meaningful. As with most of the liberal mushhead agenda, appearance of accomplishing something useful is much more important than actually accomplishing something meaningful.
Alert all of the people you care about to the incandescent light bulb situation so they have a chance of stocking up too.
To be added to the “must be reversed” list foe the next sane occupant of the White House.
Crap. Thanks. I’d forgotten about this.
I respect a cold dog tu*d more than I respect congress. Screw ‘em. You could add up all the scientific knowledge of these law idiots and not come up to that of a typical Asian 5th grader.
Are they going to tell us what toilet paper we have to use next?
While you're out, stock up on guns and ammo too. Put a couple of SUVs away while you are at it.
My refrigerator was built in 1962.
My business uses street lights and outdoor building lights
Winter here can frequently be -5/-25 degrees below zero.
Those new bulbs cannot possible work in those conditions.
Can they?
Anyone know for sure out there?
They are getting very hard to find.
I’ve got about 3,000 incandescents in storage (and about 150 more of them burning right now...for Lights Off Hour).
I’m in good shape for the rest of my days, and my kids should be pretty well off for some time. For those interested, these guys have great prices and deliver by the pallet:
http://www.lightbulbemporium.com/
I know, we don’t usually advertise here, but this is an exception, considering the what’s being done to us (and there are plenty of other bulb sellers, just go to Google).
Also, figure that when inflation explodes later this year, just about everything, including light bulbs, will triple in price.
I have concerns about the amount of mercury in CFLs. I'm not sure if the claims of danger are blown out of proportion. Our government, while outlawing minuscule amounts of lead wouldn't put us in danger of mercury poison would they??
Anyway, I don't put CFLs anywhere that my children might potentially break them.
My other big concern is how will people dispose of these new mercury laden bulbs in a responsible manner?
Well, truth be told, Obama voters simply won't dispose of these bulbs responsibly. They'll end up in the garbage, in the landfills and eventually, I suspect, in the water supply.
I plan to send my spent CFLs to the US congress and let them figure out what the hell to do with them.
Yep, definitely a good idea and the same I’ve been thinking. Especially for resale. I wonder how many years one would get for blackmarket bulbs? Are we going to change the BATF to the BATFB?
LOL! Check out the second paragraph.
It says BUSH signed this into law today.
This report says that President Bush signed the bill... is this from before Jan 20?
I’m a big fan of incandescents. A BIG fan.
Especially good to stock up if like me the majority of your light bulbs are the flush-mounted floodlights set in the ceiling.
I’m in the process of filling a cabinet with them: Lowe’s sells them in bulk in “contractor packs.”
STOCKPILE!!!
I pick up 2 or 3 4 packs of incandescents every time I go shopping. Ought to have lifetime supply by 2012.
“While standard light bulbs cost about 50 cents, the spiral CFL sells for about $3. Advocates argue, however, the CFL lasts five years longer and uses about 75 percent less energy.”
Liar, liar, pants on fire. We put four of these bulbs in our house in the last year ... and three of them have already died! Five years my behind!

I agree with the congresscritter who asked why do we want something that is made only in China, and has a hazardous content if broken?
