You want to buy a firearm at a gun show? You need a background check.
It's that simple.
But a legislative bill would waive that requirement for people who already have permits to carry concealed weapons.
The reasoning is that they've been vetted once in a thorough process, and that ought to be enough.
We disagree. Concealed-carry permits are good for five years, and a lot can happen in five years. A fresh background check should be done whenever someone purchases a gun at a gun show.
Furthermore, a background check isn't that onerous.
Lance Clem, spokesman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, tells us it takes anywhere from a few minutes to several hours for a buyer to go through InstaCheck, CBI's background check system.
In 2008, CBI conducted more than 200,000 checks via phone and Internet.
It also troubles us that this change in the law would at least partially undo Amendment 22, which was passed in 2000 in the aftermath of the Columbine slayings.

Government needs to get out of our lives.
And while they waste their time regulating law abiding citizens they play catch and release with career crimminals in illegal posession of guns.
Fools. With a simple tweak of your software, that wouldn’t be necessary at all.
In many States, when someone is arrested the system is automatically checked for outstanding warrants, and previous records, etc., and they have included checking for gun permits at that time. Same thing with child predators/sex offenders.
That way, if they are found guilty of a disqualifying offense, the permit is revoked, and the gun is confiscated.
We had this in Indiana until about five years ago.
Now, everybody gets a background check.
When I went to buy a new Glock 19 at the Indy 1500 gun show in January, I was NICS delayed for a day. Good thing I started on a Saturday. I almost had to drive 3 hours to pick up my gun.
I never found out why I was delayed.
Like one person already said in the comments section of the article:
CCW permit holders ALREADY OWN GUNS. They are not the ones you should be worrying about.
Also, in my state, everyone must go through an instant background check at gun shows when they are buying guns from dealers.
Columbine was not about guns.It was about the violence caused bySSRIs
It is safer in Iraq than in DENVER!!!
Why do the commie law makers go after the INNOCENT and ignore the laws against criminals with guns???
When you buy a gun at a gun show, a background check is already required if you buy from an FFL licensee. When you buy from a private party (at least here in Washington)it’s the same as if you drove over to his house to buy it-there’s no check. Also, in Washington there’s no waiting period if you have a CCW permit when you buy from a licensee. It’s not a loophole, it’s just the law.
I agree but they need some education including history. If they had some idea what the Constitution and Bill of Rights were would help.
I suspect this “reporter” is trying to stir things up to raise the readership since the other paper in town went bankrupt.
Another problem is that we don't any obvious or easy ways to see our own records or appeal/clean them up.
And our dear "representive governent" keeps adding more limitations to deny a firearm authorization (domestic abuse, real or just alleged, old misdemeanors that have now been upgraded to a felony, restraining orders from angry ex-wives, etc.)
All we've done is accept a backdoor form of licensing.
how about a background check on Obama??? birth certificate anyone????
The fishwrap Denver comPost removed my comment
suggesting the officer be checked for SSRIs.I also suggested that she be put on the bow and arrow squad.
The fishwrap will be gone soon unless 0bama "invests" in the newpapers.
—pretty much gave up on posing on the DP—too many loose nuts—by the way , your link to SSRI’s doesn’t seem to work—
Government wants background checks let them create a database that provides current data instantly. Don’t put the burden on law abiding vendors and buyers.
Then sort on location or date Try this one SSRIs
My dealer gave me the number of the NICS contact, so that I might call and try to figure out what the problem was.
I called, but the rep wouldn’t forward me or give me any info.
Meanwhile, the guy next to me was delayed.
He had a son with the same name, who had a felony conviction and once lived at the same address.
The guy called, and he was able to give them the explanation.
The guy on the phone said he’d corrected the error and before the guy got back to the boot (gun show), NICS was on the phone with the approval.
Five minutes.
I had to way 20 hours.
You never know what you’re going to get.
