Code Renegade: Barack Obama is coming to the UK - and so is his flying circus

Anton Antonowicz, US correspondent 28/03/2009

We join all the President’s men and women

Roll up, roll up, the £20million White House Flying Circus is coming to Britain.

Next week, Barack Obama’s first overseas trip as President sees him meeting the Queen before joining 19 world leaders at the G20 summit on Thursday in London’s Docklands.

Barack (Secret Service codename Renegade) and First Lady Michelle (codename Renaissance) then fly to France, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Here we break down the amazing organisation, high-tech gadgetry and fleet of security and helpers who are coming along for the ride…

The Entourage

At least 500 officials will accompany Obama on his trip... and then there’s the back-up staff.

Apart from the 200 or so Secret Service personnel, there’s the Service’s Counter-Assault Team, the White House Military Office, the White House Transportation Agency, the White House Medical Unit, the Marine Corps Helicopter Squadron, the State Department Presidential Travel Support Service, the US Information Agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Customs Service.

And, if that’s not enough, throw in the kitchen sink, or the White House Mess – the chefs and ancillary staff who prepare the presidential nosh.

Wondering if he’s going to walk that walk my wife and myself witnessed tonight on ? network “news” channel as he approached the podium to speak about Afghanistan?

She watches TV, was flicking channels trying in vain to find something, anything to watch. I don’t watch TV, but I turned around from the ‘puter screen in time to witness something akin to a bowling alley warmup movement, along with some sort of hip hop gate in his walk to the podium.

Once he was at the podium, he put on his “composed expression”, and....she flicked the channel again...buh bye Obama.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a remote that could do that, and perhaps instill as President a real one? With a flick of a button our problems would be solved....>>POP<<.. Oh yeah, it’s late. I must have dozed off and was dreaming.

I hope BHO and his wife are served a state dinner of fish and chips where they will be presented a collection of plastic models of Big Ben, London Bridge, and a nifty replica Royal Guard doll, all from the Royal Palace gift shop's clearance rack.

“...must easily cost into the tens of thousands of dollars.”

You're kidding right? The article says £ 20 million. It's not clear whether that's the U.K. portion, the U.S. portion, or both. It's probably not both. When Obama visited Ottawa for 7 hours, that cost the Canadian government over $10 million (security, etc.).

I think in Germany...Obama may have lost half of his luster....although there is still 50 percent of the public heavily in his favor. The big issue is that any speech he makes...and thinks that it helps the Social Democrats in the fall election....is sadly miscalculating.

The German media stood up shortly after Xmas and asked who is the “German Obama”....and the SPD has no one of his standing, caliber or speech-making ability. But...there is the slightly right-leaning guy...Guido Westerwelle of the FDP party...who appears to be taking every single ounce of Obama energy in Germany for himself. The FDP guys have soared up in the ratings and probably can get around 17 percent of the public vote in September.

Toss in the fact that almost all economical experts in Germany have negative ideas about the Obama rescue plan...and the idea that the war still continues on (more so in Afghanistan)...and there is this smirk on the faces of German faces when the guy pops.
