(03-27) 10:51 PDT Oakland, Calif. (AP) --
Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums is attending Friday's funeral for four slain city police officers, but will not be speaking at the request of at least one killed officer's family.
The mayor's spokesman, Paul Rose, said Dellums turned down a police offer to give opening remarks after at least one of the families requested he not be among the dignitaries speaking at the ceremony.
Rose said the mayor did not want to "make an awkward situation even more awkward."

Did any of the speakers condemn the marchers of a few days ago?
I don’t think any politicians should have given speeches. It should have been fellow officers, friends and family.
Why would it be awkward?
How do we even know whether it’s true?
Maybe he just didn’t want to be seen at a funeral for “the man.”
ok, I give up..why would they request the mayor not speak?? (It’s not a stupid question, I really don’t know..)
I don’t think that would be appropriate.
Video coverage is here, KPIX, local CBS affiliate.
But the speakers, well they could have spoken out before, after or even the day before. Did any of them do that either? Was Rev Sharpton there condemning the marchers?
I assume that that is what the undercurrent is about. It would seem to me that to condemn the radicals parading around would be in order.
I for one think that bad behavior needs to be called out ... It is the only way to put it back in the sewer. Look I am not there, but it is getting tiring seeing our law officers used as propaganda props, yes they showed the marchers and their chanting on our TV sets. Why?
I assume the 'dignitaries' were there to push the gun control angle, with no apologies.
I'm watching the video of the opening of the memorial service. The stadium can hold 20,000 and is almost at capacity. Law enforcement officers are coming from out of state to honor their fallen comrades.
Look at the sea of faces in the audience.
Sgt. Daniel Sakai, UC Berkeley grad, his wife is a UC Berkeley campus police officer. Dead at just 35 and he leaves behind a very young daughter, 4 years old, I think.
ltc8k6’s reply (#8) sounds like the proximate cause, but in addition, Dellums was a long-time congressman from Oakland, and was about as extreme a leftie as you could imagine, even by California standards. “Red Ron” Dellums was the way he was referred to, as I recall. I guess it’s conceivable that the family of a cop might be offended by someone that far out on the fringe.
Ron Dellums went to the funeral services? Was his wife out of town?
Doesn't take much imagination to determine the reasons.
Dellums is what is known as a 'root cause'.
It’s so tragic for these families - and for the rape victims. The whole things seems to be growing ugly. I just watched segment on BOR show where he actually gave airtime to the slim who organized the protest in defense of the killer. The guys eyes projected pure evil and hatred.
Dellums is in the same socialist group with Conyers, Obama, and Waters. Difficult to differentiate him from an American communist.

I was really surprised none of them started a tearful diatribe on gun control...

I saw the segment. The man was seen for the kind of man he was ... a wacko.

I’m sure you’re not serious.
