"Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political; peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none; the support of the State governments in all their rights, as the most competent administrations for our domestic concerns and the surest bulwarks against anti republican tendencies; the preservation of the General Government in its whole constitutional vigor, as the sheet anchor of our peace at home and safety abroad; a jealous care of the right of election by the people--a mild and safe corrective of abuses which are lopped by the sword of revolution where peaceable remedies are unprovided; absolute acquiescence in the decisions of the majority, the vital principle of republics, from which is no appeal but to force, the vital principle and immediate parent of despotism; a well disciplined militia, our best reliance in peace and for the first moments of war, till regulars may relieve them; the supremacy of the civil over the military authority; economy in the public expense, that labor may be lightly burthened; the honest payment of our debts and sacred preservation of the public faith; encouragement of agriculture, and of commerce as its handmaid; the diffusion of information and arraignment of all abuses at the bar of the public reason; freedom of religion; freedom of the press, and freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus, and trial by juries impartially selected." - Thomas Jefferson

His wisdom applies just as much today, if not more so, as it did then... "These principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which to try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety." - Thomas Jefferson
The American people are starving for this type of leadership! The question remains, do we have anyone who even comes close to being able to fill these shoes?
Is Mr. Steele pro-abortion/pro-choice? ...I heard/read from some lib?
Steele should resign. He said he would fight for every seat. Ask chicagolady about that. He’s done nothing but pander to the media, attack Limbaugh, and now he seeks a ‘consensus’ on what to do.
Thats not leading.
Steele is a joke. Steele must resign.
Not a copper for the RNC!!
I guess it depends on the audience
Yes, he told GQ in an interview that people have a right to an abortion. He has made one gaffe after another, but that was certainly the worst. Unforgiveable.
Iswear, the person who Campaigns on THAT platform has MY vote.
I once had an interesting conversation with a Jefferson scholar on whether he would still be a Jeffersonian Republican today or a Federalist. It seems that a key part of Jefferson’s view of the nation was that voters were informed and tied to their community (Jefferson loved farmers). Seems to be the opposite for many today.
“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”
—Thomas Jefferson to C. Yancey, 1816.
There are many, many other quotes from Jefferson like this one regarding the need for the public to be educated in order to hold onto their freedoms.
I think he would be absolutely appalled at the state of our supposed education system today and the gross abuse of power by our Federal gov’t.
The fact that our gov’t forces our most precious national treasure, our children, to sit in school for eight hours or more a day for 12 years... only to have some of the worst test scores of any civilized nation and drop-out rates of 75% or higher in some cities... for me, that is an act of treason... I think it is done on purpose to keep people dumbed down and passive and I think Jefferson would agree.
I’m always amazed by Jefferson’s simple brilliance.
If I were to draw parallel time lines between Jefferson’s period and ours, I’d say we’re at about 1760. We need to do more work in establishing a political base amongst the local and state governments.
The tea parties are a good first step, but the calls to roll the guillotine down Pennsylvania Avenue are too soon, although I admire Americans itching for a fight now; they are the point of the spear in our imminent clash with the Tories in Washington. Further, we need to set up a modern equivalent of the Sons of Liberty. We are not ready yet to take on King Goerge obama III. But neither is the ghetto thug ready to take on the American patriots.
We are at a draw right now. Patient organization will reward us with the edge and comittment to throw the rascals out of our house.
