On Wednesday, the National Urban League (NUL) released the State of Black America 2009 report that shows that while the entire country is hurting during tough economic times, African Americans are disproportionately hurting worse.
The annual report is a barometer of conditions for African-Americans in the United States. It includes the NUL's Equality Index, a statistical measurement of the disparities between Blacks and Whites across five categories: economics, education, health, civic engagement and social justice.
Small step back
This year's report shows an overall slight decline in the status of Blacks as compared to Whites, moving from 71.5 percent in 2008 to 71.1 percent in 2009. Theonly sub-index that increased over the past year was in health at about 1.1 percentage points. This was largely because the gap narrowed for those without health insurance.
Thereport this year takes a look back at the past five years of the Equality Index to view trends of progress and decline.
Between 2003 and 2007, the poverty rate and home ownership rate declined for Blacks but increased for Whites. Even as both groups made progress in educational attainment, the progress was slower for Blacks. During the same period, while White children saw increases in pre-primary enrollment of about 3 percent, Black children saw a decline of about 1 percent, causing the education gap to grow, not shrink. The report this year shows the trend continues.
This year's NUL report reminds the country that the election of President Obama does not mean the work of civil rights is done.

We don’t have to read the full report. We know the conclusions. We know that they will say that blacks lag behind in key areas. We know that they will say that, 55 years after Brown vs. Board of Education, that blacks lag behind. We know that they will say that in education, health care, employment, and housing, that blacks lag behind. All of the alleged problems will be blamed on ligering racism or institutional discrimination.
...ya, that’s pretty much it. I just enjoyed the notion that in the year when the first black American assumes the presidency, the state of ‘black America’ should be regarded as ‘slightly worse.’
That’s what happens when you spend your life blaming all your failures on Whitey. You never take responsibility, you never correct defective cultural/behavioral characteristics, and you never really improve. But that’s OK, Sharpton probabaly has a new Cadillac. The black folks who follow these race pimps are just tools.
Isn't it a coincidence that the illegitimacy rate for black is also 70%. Gee! Could that have something to do with it? Naw! ( /sarc).
Hmmm black President, AG, formerly Sec of State, NSA advisor— oh ya dominate the music industry, sports, and MTV.
I don’t see Native Americans or Vietnamese people complaining. The indian kid in front of my house goes to school everyday in the crappiest looking clothes. Probably gets made fun of all day. But I bet he gets better grades than the thugs with $100 sneakers whining about civil rights. Sickening.
First in with: “Bush’s fault”.
When does the State Of White America come out?
April 15th
Because as long as their are race hustlers out there, with a willing commie lib press to herald their false charges as "truth": there will always be RACISM in America, and it is never going to get better.
Hey..... its good for business! Well at least for certain people within the Democrat party.
Well...gee....as long as you stay on the DEMOCRAT PLANTATION that’s what will happen to ya!
We’re firin’ on all cylinders tonight. Good one.
As long as we keep thinking in terms of “racial equality” instead of in terms of the equal treatment of all Americans, regardless of race, under the law, well be saddled with the professional race-baiters and the reparations whores and the you-owe-me mentality of a cultural underclass. Which, of course, is exactly what the race-baiters and whores want... even if it destroys the 13% of the American population that they claim to represent.
As a dear old friend once remarked, “Thirty years ago I argued that society and the law should be color-blind, and they called me a Communist. Im still making the same argument, but today theyre calling me a right-wing Fascist.”
I’ve never seen “Black America” is it near “White America”?
I wonder if it’s occurred to anyone who actually cares about more than the next layer of dependence, entitlement, and race hustling that the best thing for black Americans might just be to run as far and as fast as they can from the “National Urban League”.
It’s the urban gutters, stupid.
Out-of-wedlock births for blacks - 70% nationwide
Out-of-wedlock births for blacks in urban areas - 80-85%
A good question is what will poor african americans think four or eight years from now (depending an Obama re-election) when their dire straits have remained unchanged as from before his election? We know from the past experience (LBJ's War On Poverty) that simply funneling billions of dollars into welfare or similar programs has done little or nothing to relieve black poverty.
In fact most cogent critics have concluded that it did the exact opposite...it made black americans lives a lot worse. So under the Obama admin goal of establishing "fairness," we expect to see further billions if not trillions redistributed to the "worthy". We will get the same results...continued poverty and the further destruction of the black family. Will the eagerly waiting recipients of Obama's largesse (at tax-payer expense) be any wiser when they see they are as miserable as they were before The Savior was elected. I hope they would be, but I doubt it.
Does so far as I am concerned.
Between huge wealth transfers and special legal preferences enough and more has been done to bring 12% of the population into the main stream. The results have destroyed the black society with 80% and more children born illegitimate.
I'm giving notice; everybody is on their own to succeed or fail as they can. I have to take care of me and mine.
