The U.S. Senate on Thursday voted for the biggest boost in public service since President John F. Kennedy urged Americans in 1961 to "ask what you can do for your country."
Divided over efforts to stem greed and abuse on Wall Street and to carve out a budget amid economic crisis, the Senate showed rare unity in approving -- by a vote of 78-20 -- a $5.7 billion bill to enlist Americans to help the needy at home and abroad amid the global recession.
* Legislation would boost national service
* Obama promises to sign into law
* Draws broad support from Democrats, Republicans

Wasting more of our tax dollars I see. Why pay for volunteerism is what I would like to know and what I think of community organizers is not printable.
Utterly disgusting. Who were the republicans that voted for this?
What a crock of commie dung
RINOs turned out in force for this travesty. What is WRONG with them? Can’t they see they are digging their own graves?
I already Help the needy in my community. I dont need government telling me to. Or forcing me to, or anybody else.
If Congress is for it, I’m against it.
is this is the mandatory volunteerism? how lovely
Insanity! What is the GOP thinking!
Gee, Im to old for the Hitler youth program.
My service to the country will be to help vote all Liberals and RINO’s out of office...

The GOP cannot fight every single battle. I suspect they figure that this one's cost is relatively low compared to some of the gargantuan costs of some of the other stuff the liberals are proposing.
I think they are right. They are going to have to let some stuff slip through and keep powder dry for the huge fights.
Then, we also had the AmeriCorps “volunteers”. The government gives them the stipend, but the NPO matches it. Thus, they get $14,000 for 10 months of work. The government also provides health coverage for the “volunteers” and scholarship $$ for past student loans or future college expenses. There is no “volunteerism”. The AmeriCorps are paid. Many of the AmeriCorps “volunteers” are actually parents of the kids in the programs. Statistically, AmeriCorps has failed in promoting the volunteerism and civil contributions it was designed to instill. It hasn't worked and they know it!!!!
AmeriCorps partners with established national and local volunteer associations that fit a certain profile. There are some fine organizations that provide excellent training. Ours did not. The head of the one we worked with came from Amnesty International. She “trained” the “volunteers”. The whole thing was discouraging to me - so much so that I left that sort of nonprofit work.
The government is going to pay people to ‘volunteer’?!
That sounds just plain stupid!
I have volunteered my entire life and have never even thought about being paid for it. That’s why it’s called VOLUNTEERING!!!
You would think congress has better things to do with their time!

Bunch of idiots. I hope they are patting themselves on the back, because they have just voted for socialist ideology. Too much to hope these morons know the difference, but I guess not. I sincerely hope Rush, Levine, Hannity, et al. give all these bastards crap for this vote.
“The government is going to pay people to volunteer?!”
AmeriCorps is one of the first ‘order of business’ clinton accomplished in early ‘90’s.
Americorps = paid volunteering.
So do we and St. Jude. We will determine for ourselves who we give to and who we don’t.
