Redoubt eruptions threaten airline routes (another Eruption)
Anchorage Daily News ^ | 3-26-09 | JULIA O'MALLEY

Redoubt volcano erupted for the second time this morning with a huge explosion at 9:24 that sent a cloud of ash to 65,000 feet above sea level.

It looks like the plume is going to drift kind of over Prince William Sound and then into the Copper River, Cordova area, and then into the Panhandle," said Alaska Volcano Observatory geologist Chris Waythomas in Anchorage.

"It could cause some real serious issues for aviation throughout the day, and I wouldn't be surprised if some flights are going to be canceled here," he said.

Alaska Airlines officials said they are still evaluating whether flight cancellations will be necessary. Travelers are advised to check the status of flights before going to the airport.

I hope Algore threatens to sue Mother Nature if she doesn’t pony up for those carbon offsets.

A plume rises thousands of feet into the air after the first of two eruptions of Mount Redoubt on Thursday morning. The volcano’s summit is about level with the tops of the trees in the foreground.

It would be interesting to correlate volcanic singularities with both climate change and carbon dioxide levels.

I have little doubt of that we'd find the atmosphere cooling after supervolcaos with a concomitant rise in atmospheric carbon.

Even 3 years and 200 volcano threads ago, this joke wasn't all that funny.

And it's not really accurate. For volcanoes like this the Sulfur Dioxide ejected in to the upper atmosphere causes more cooling than the CO2 ejected causes warming. And the net volcanic output of CO2 is still much, much less than that of human activity.

On the webcam a pretty serious lahar was visible; it’s possible the Drift River oil terminal was destroyed.

Looks like one of their WEBCAMS got splattered -- or something...

Palin’s fault.

These two eruptions came with almost no warning, the first one at 8:24 sent a plume up to 30,000 feet, the second at 9:24 was the largest eruption yet, the Homer area is under an ash warning and will probably get one eighth of an inch.

There is a flash flood warning from melting snow at the Drift River. And now its being said Anchorage will get a minuscule amount basically a film on windshields.

The upper level wind direction is heading right for where I live just north of Wasilla but it will mostly stay at that altitude, we have rain and snow in the forecast.

Whats scary is these are explosive eruptions with little warning, the longer the interval the stronger the event, scientish say a magma dome is building in the mountain.

They will be needing a few billion of these.

I thinks we might get an early breakup from the darkened snow, where are you, in Homer?

this will cause global COOLING, as it did when Mt. Pinatubo blew its lid in the 90’s

we are in for a rough couple of years....

and Algore is a flaming ass.

It’s hard to tell here whether the stuff on the snow is dust from the street or ash from the sky. My snow is going fast, anyway, but I’m on a south-facing hillside.

Oh, come on. It's not man made so they get a pass. Unless of course, they can pin it on Palin.

Yep, volcanoes spew *real* pollution, not CO2. Although I can hardly blame people for confusing the two, since Warmists tend to deliberately conflate CO2 with everything else "bad".

These eruptions pale against the likes of Pinatubo or Krakatoa, these are just earth farts.

No, they’ll just let the Volcano take our share, which will up their profit and increase the going rate to us.

There is a flash flood warning from melting snow at the Drift River.

It was already getting bad.

Flood water and debris from the Drift River surround an aircraft hanger and nearby buildings at the Drift River Terminal Facility on the west side of Cook Inlet, 22 miles from the summit of Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano, on Tuesday, March 24, 2009. The facility collects oil from offshore platforms. Oil remains in two of the facility's seven tanks.

Flood water and debris from the Drift River push against a retaining wall protecting the Drift River Terminal Facility on Tuesday, March 24, 2009. The facility collects oil from offshore platforms. Now, with Redoubt melting ice and snow on its flanks, the river is a mile-wide zone of broken trees, ice, mud, ash and water. Oil remains in two of the facility's seven tanks.
