BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A U.S. crackdown on European online gambling breaches World Trade Organization rules and would justify action at the World Trade Organization, the European Commission said on Thursday.

The European Union executive, which oversees trade policy for the 27-nation bloc, said its draft report found that such U.S.

laws hampered trade and thus were inconsistent with WTO rules but stressed it would seek a negotiated solution. "It is for the U.S. to decide how best to regulate Internet gambling in its market, but this must be done in a way that fully respects WTO obligations," EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

Well I have to admit Obama's national service rhetoric is a bit scary. So is all this "By American" talk.

It is complete nonsense, pandering to people who have lost their jobs by inventing monsters overseas. No one is "shipping jobs overseas". Some American businesses fail to compete and go out of business as a result. That is as it should be. Hollings was just shamelessly pandering for votes.

Rather than blaming the successful competitor, who after all is doing you a favor by making things cheaper for you, why not look for the reasons American business have trouble competing. Look at the unions, the tort bar, the EPA, the SEC, the IRS, etc. These are the real threats to national survival. And while your at it, don't forget the Fed.

More failed statism. If people want to gamble, let them. It’s their money.

What I’m pointing out to you is that there was NO NEED for this business to ever a) have gone offshore, b) for this to EVER fall under the jurisdiction of the WTO, or c) for us to have lost this business and tax revenue.

The agreement will benefit U.S. manufacturers of medical instruments, farm equipment, drugs and electronic products, whose exports will no longer face other nation's tariffs. Some less-efficient smaller farmers and the nation's textile and clothing manufacturers are most at risk from increased imports resulting from the lowering of U.S. trade barriers.

>>U.S. Internet gambling laws breach WTO rules(Taxation without Representation)<<

Wouldn’t that imply that taxing imports would violate the same rules?
