McCain: People voted 'mostly for Sarah Palin' last year

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has no illusions about the 2008 White House race.

"God bless them," McCain said Thursday at the Heritage Foundation when reminded of the tens of millions of people who voted for him last year.

"Over 50 million people voted for me and Sarah Palin - mostly for Sarah Palin," McCain said to an eruption of laughter. But "there was a sizable majority of the other party returned to Congress. And, elections have consequences. Elections have consequences. And these consequences we are seeing now in full display."

Slight correction: people voted mostly for BHO last year, thanks to the dynamics that put McCain on the ticket instead of a candidate who could actually win.

We didn't have a candidate who could actually win last year. Sarah wasn't running for president and most of us never knew her until she was nominated. THAT is what is pathetic. Last year we had the worst, repeat-the worst group of candidates that have ever run for president.

It’s about time the backstabbing pile of RINO-ness admitted Governor Palin is why he even got close!

Could the 72-yr old Barney Rubble look-a-like finally be considering retirement? Maybe he knows he’s likely to get waxed in 21 months at the polls and like a retiring NASCAR driver, he’s prepping for his “victory tour.”

RINO.

He MUST be replaced by a traditional conservative defender of the US Constitution. Surely someone in Arizona defends the Constitution.

That is sooo true. I’m one of those voters!

Gotta run, I intend to win a little tennis match. :-)

"I’m convinced he had absolutely no intention of winning that election."

I've believed that from the get-go. I wouldn't be surprised if he was told to bring her on because they thought she was a sure loser. His job was simply to provide a name for the GOP campaign, not to win.

hmm I voted for McCain. Not crazy about him but at least he had years of experience on national/international issues. Palin certainly wasn’t ready to become commander in chief from day 1.

It would never sink in with her.

She has very strong principled reasons behind her hatred of Conservative starting with the fact that they are like sooo totally not cool!

I hope his daughter just goes away.

Can't win then you would actually have to do something.

“We didn’t have a candidate who could actually win last year.”

I disagree. Giuliani could have won. Romney could have won. Both actually wanted to win. I believe that Thompson (Fred, that is) would have had a shot as well with a bit more public display of a desire to lead.

Underneath it all McCain has a certain amount of class. It was deferential. The literal truth of his remark is beside the point. He said something nice about a lady whose efforts he appreciated, and who he undoubtedly likes and respects.

She brought him millions of votes.

Still she is vilified as being responsible for McCain losing while all the time he wanted Obama...who “we have no reason to fear” and will be a “great President”

The GOP helped elect Obama.

Sarah Rockz!

Is there a way to make sure that the states that actually went for the republican candidate in the last general election get a little more weight in the nomination process next time around?

At the present time (and unless someone runs in 2012 with stronger conservative credentials - not likely) Sarah has my vote too.

McCain is such a bastard. The way he handled the whole candiacy of Palin made the Republican party look like a bunch of hypocrites. He sure made the Republicans swallow a lot. Now he comes out with this? It figures. The man can do no right. I have a feeling he didn’t know about Bristol’s pregnancy. And then he makes a laughing stock out of the Republicans with that phony story the kids were going to get married and therefore anyone with an opinion that maybe this wasn’t a good idea to put on national stage with the party of family values, those people were demonized. Thanks John McCain. I love the decision to arrogantly decided too to dress up Palin with all the campaign donations. McCain was a real creep. He did plenty to cause the Republican Party trouble for years to come. All because he is a sore loser to Bush. He should be voted out of office!

A Navy pilot, defending his country in a time of war, spends 7 years in the hell-hole of a Vietnam prison and he's "such a bastard"? Meanwhile, the fratboy (who is suspected of missing a lot of his assigned Air Guard drills), admittedly "partied it up" on the weekends even to the effect of getting pulled for DUI, and spends the last two years of his Reserve Component time (that he swore would be to Texas) in Alabama politicing is your kind of hero?

It was George W. Bush who made the laughing stock out of the Republican Party with the sky-high spending bills his veto pen never touched. It was Bush that the American electorate voted against, not McCain, and it IS Bush that we now have Obama in the Oval Office.

If John McCain is a "bastard" then Bush is the biggest S.O.B. this nation has ever known...

Every person I know who voted R last November voted for Sarah.
Same with random people I have met recently with the exception of one young man.
Most interesting person I met who voted for Sarah? A young black lady who is a meter maid here in Boston. She was a huge Sarah fan and told me she would be the first Republican she ever voted for.

Interesting that we Palin supporters are looking forward to winning and ousting Obama in 2012

While the Third Party loons on this thread are not voting for Palin and will make it possible for another Obama win.

But they don’t mind as they are both anti war, global warmer and want Obama to succeed
