I think the Japanese "lost decade" would be a mild credit crunch compared to what we'll experience in the coming years.
Ron Paul's quirkiness aside, the devaluation of the dollar that we're seeing and will continue to see and the ensuing hyper-inflation is going to be very, very uncomfortable.

Most of the other currencies are pegged or devaluing themselves. Also declines in interest rates are deflationary (read Antal Fekete's latest for example). The dollar will show strength for a lot longer than you expect.
