Just look at book sellers.

They adamently work against ANY digitizing of the books as much as humanly possible.

Quite frankly I would rather pay $1 for a digital copy of an “just read it” book (contrasted to a book I want to collect) so I can cary it in my PDA for reading or computer reading it for me when I drive.

Pragmatic Programmers offers nearly all their titles as PDF files. You can buy a paper copy if you prefer. As a PDF buyer, you have a perpetual right to download copies of your purchases from their site. When errata are fixed, they notify you of an updated edition. I buy lots of their titles that way. The PDF fits on my computer instead of the paper books filling my briefcase. The major cost for paper books is physical shipping from the printer to the store. The PDF books just take a little download time and disk space. The overhead to the "publisher" is running the servers, network and maintaining the databases of purchases.

Pragmatic Programmers maintains errata files for the paper copies and online ZIP files of the example code where appropriate to the book. I sometimes download the examples to decide whether I want the book. Most of the time I do. Crappy workmanship in the example code is frequently a presage of the quality of the book. Fortunately, the editoral staff does a very good job of minimizing that issue.
