Police deaths give leverage to toughen gun laws
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/24/9 | Chip Johnson

If history repeats itself, the fatal shootings of four Oakland police officers on Saturday afternoon will become the next benchmark in the national debate on a federal law to ban assault weapons.

If there is a grain of hope to be gathered from a loss so tragic, it's that last weekend's horrific events will help end the debate on an unresolved policy issue that has resulted in thousands of deaths and helped sustain veritable demilitarized zones in some of our nation's largest cities.

In Oakland, a city already struggling with high crime and gun violence, the deaths of two officers gunned down with an AK-47 qualify city officials to lend their voices to any national debate on the issue.

While the tragedy in Oakland lacks the scale of the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Columbine High School nearly a decade ago, the deaths of four officers in a single incident is a significant event that sends shock waves across the nation.

The use of the deadly weapons - which can fire hundreds of rounds per minute - has become an all-too-familiar feature in the gun violence being played out.

A word of advice to California. You have prisons....USE THEM!

Early release of criminals guarantees over 80% of offenders will repeat as criminals.

Illegal possession by a convicted felon has absolutely nothing to do with legal firearm possession. Punishing legal gun owners does nothing to stop criminal activity.

Lieberal idiots!

qualify city officials to lend their voices to any national debate on the issue.

What, a policeman dies in your city and suddenly you're an expert on gun policy? That's like saying if someone crashes a bike, all the sudden you're Lance Armstrong.

The real solution to this 'problem' is to gun-up citizens like yesterday.

Years of in-attention to this minor detail has allowed Killa and the Thugettes to play too long on the hit parade.

Bet this Oakland shoota could have been dispatched long ago if politicians and traitors to our constitution hadn't been running cover for him for so long. Maybe his first robbery, carjacking, or rape could have been his last. Boo hoo, beyatch.

Hey California, it was already illegal for this CRIMINAL to have a gun. Fat lot of good those gun laws do.

How about keeping murderous raping thugs in PRISON instead?

Yeah, I saw that too. Anybody with some practice using a basic wheel gun would meet this deadly threshold.

The Left wants guns banned. The hard work for us is to discover the reason the left wants guns banned.

Someone out there, help me solve this very “complex” issue.

I saw a great quote yesterday on FR, that sums your question up perfectly IMO at least. The quote said, "The left is not anti-gun. They’re anti-us-having-guns".

I think this sums it up perfectly. The left simply wants to outlaw guns from average, law abiding, patriotic, conservative Americans, who ARE the bedrock of defending America & our 2nd Amendment rights. The left has no problem with thug socialist-fascist police or security forces (under control of socialists of course) or of private body guards having guns, since they would be the only ones to legally have guns in the left's warped deranged mindset. And the left has no problems when elitist leftists like Sen Diane Feinstein (CA) has special permission to conceal & carry, but will howl in outrage over conceal & carry laws for you & I. And of course I really don't think the left is concerned about crimials having guns, because that just plays into their anti-2nd amendment attacks.

The gun control obsession by the left is pure & simple a long standing totalitarian power play to rob us of our guns and leave us defenseless against government socialist-fascist commie pig thugs (like Obooomba) or criminal thugs....but I repeat myself!!!

I hope they caught that gun. It desrves solitary with no oil for life. Maybe even the melt penalty. If it escapes it could be a repeat offender. There is no rehabilitating a gun.

Police deaths give leverage to keep criminals in prison.

Police deaths give leverage to concealed carry by citizens to protect themselves and other citizens from criminals with illegal guns.

Police deaths give leverage to demand for more prisons

Police deaths give leverage to demands for firing "liberal" judges who refuse to keep dangerous criminals in prison

Police deaths give leverage to leverage to kicking Democrats out of both houses so that tougher laws dealing with criminals can be passed.

Police deaths give leverage to denial of parole for criminals convicted of violent crimes.

All of these are reasonable reactions, but what does Lefty media come up with? Making the streets safer for criminals!!!

idiots.

Yes, Mr. Johnson. Let’s ban a firearm that is already illegal to own here in California. That’ll solve the problem!!! Never mind the fact that this violent thug should have been locked up and not running around loose (oh, but we can’t blame the one who killed the officers - that would be racist). What an ignoramous.

As a convicted felon, Mixon was, I believe, prohibited by law from even TOUCHING a gun, much less owning.

Even were he NOT a convicted felon, he’s still prohibited by law from shooting people without a reallly good reason.

Other than the perp probably already hated cops, my guess is that if he were caught with a gun, it would be a third strike. He decided to shoot it out rather than get arrested. Of course the press makes it a gun ownership issue, rather than a felon who decided to break the law once again.

The police were killed by a violent criminal on unsupervised parole who should never have been let out of prison.

What does this have to do with gun control?
