The Capitol City has cameras at eight intersections around the city and a three-year contract with the company that manufacturers them.

City officials have until Oct. 1 to take down the cameras.

Good. Politicians were exploiting the camera’s for revenue instead of safety. Some were being tweaked to ‘catch’ violaters all for more revenue. Deep six em all!

Why don’t they retool the cameras to catch graffiti “artists” who deface private and public property? And leave regular citizens be!

If you don’t run red lights, you need not fear the cameras.

why are they a bad idea?

Because you can't face your accuser, they catch vehicles not drivers, they are used for revenue not safety, they don't work on illegal aliens who's plates are stolen, there is no chance for appeal, too easy to use for political intimidation and they don't support the doughnut industry!

In San Francisco they spent a ton of taxpayer dollars to install cameras at intersections in the city. People started inquiring about their effectiveness, particularly since the city is going broke and they wanted to know how much money was generated by tickets on red-light runners. After several years of operation, it turns out that very few tickets were sent, and fewer resulted in revenue.

It turns out that the photos/video was substandard and resulted in tickets being thrown out in court challenges. Much of it is a sham. I had a personal experience, having my car broadsided and totaled by a red-light runner at a busy intersection with a camera. I called the cops, they couldn't be bothered to come check on the accident. Only after I demanded they send someone because of possible injuries and the danger of spilled gasoline did they send someone. A bicycle cop. He wouldn't even write a ticket on the red-light runner, despite witnesses and the camera. I ended up getting a good lawyer and got a nice settlement from the culprit, all without any help from the cops.

Cameras are a bad idea in SF, as they are not utilized!

It has nothing to do with fear. It’s about trust.

Red light and radar cameras are not about making roads safer. They are about increasing revenue for govt.

about increasing revenue for govt.
Just like taxing tobacco and alcohol is not about health.

These cameras are causing rear end collisions. People stopping for yellow lights because they didn’t want to risk a ticket being rear ended by the guy behind them that expects to get through the intersection before the light changes.

Looking for a silly picture, I found the following link, of possible interest to those places who retain the "Red Light Cameras".
