In their continuing quest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, state regulators have uncovered a new villain in the war on global warming : your big screen TV
Couch potatoes, beware.
The California Energy Commission is considering a proposal that would ban California retailers from selling all but the most energy-efficient televisions. Critics say the news standards could take 25 percent of televisions off the market most of them 40 inches or larger.
(snip)
Affordable big screen TVs will still be available under the new standards, spokesman Adam Gottlieb said. In fact, he said the regulations will save you money.
The commission calculates that if you buy televisions meeting the proposed standards itll cut your annual energy use by drum roll, please $18 to $30.
I dont know anyone who doesnt like to save money, Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb said the commission is exploring the regulations to reduce the strain on the energy grid and to avoid building new power plants.
Televisions are the fastest growing consumer appliance in California. Californians are buying bigger TVs, and more of them. If something doesnt happen, televisions are going to devour a bigger and bigger piece of the states power grid, which means well need more power plants. More power plants mean more greenhouse gas emissions.
Consumers arent aware of the hidden cost of powering these things, Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb insisted that the regulations wouldnt eliminate big screens from California stores. But the commissions own draft report says TV energy use is proportional to the screen size. And theres no doubt the regulations will limit energy use.
Ohhh pleez Mr. Regulator... can I have a bigger TV if I promise to run it off of solar cells?
Can they be any more stupid out there?
Does, ANYONE, ANYWHERE, have any doubts whatsoever, that these people are fascists bent on controlling every aspect of our lives ?
Poor hit hardest.

The lunacy continues.
Does this apply to just brick-and-mortar retailers such as Best Buy or to online e-tailers such as Newegg also?
How soon will we see bootleg TVs and regulations prohibiting transport of unauthorized TVs into California in personal vehicles?
“This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.”
Not a day has gone by since January that I don’t have this Hunt for Red October quotation going through my head.
I wonder if that will be the tipping point. Probably not, considering all of the other BS they have tolerated in that state.
Buy it out of state. Sales tax also goes to another state.
Circuit City went down the tubes. What chain will be next?
Don't underestimate the savvy of us consumers in understanding the cost of government regulation Gottlieb.
barry doesn’t want us to see his prompter
Ronald Reagan used to say that the 3 biggest lies were:
1. The check is in the mail;
2. I will respect you in the morning and;
3. I’m from the government and I’m here to help you.
How about 3a. “In fact, he said the regulations will save you money”.
California is just at the vanguard of the Communist movement.
By the time this Communist government is through with us, we’ll have both monetary system and standard of living of Zimbabwe.
2010 - Best Buy stores in Las Vegas, Portland and Tahoe report massive increases in sales from out of state consumers for some inexplicable reason.
