(03-21) 22:55 PDT OAKLAND -- Three Oakland police sergeants were shot and killed and a fourth officer was critically wounded Saturday in a pair of related incidents that together rank among the deadliest attacks on law enforcement in California history.

A fifth officer, a member of the SWAT team that killed the suspect police held responsible for the shootings, was treated for minor injuries and released.

The first incident happened about 1:15 p.m. when two traffic officers were gunned down after what police described as a "routine" stop of a 1995 Buick in the 7400 block of MacArthur Boulevard in East Oakland, not far from the Eastmont Town Center.

About two hours later, after some 200 officers from Oakland Police, Alameda County Sheriff's Office, BART Police and the California Highway Patrol combed the area for the suspect, three SWAT officers were shot when their team found him hidden in an apartment on 74th Avenue near Hillside Street, police officials said.

In all, two SWAT officers and one traffic officer died in the two incidents; one traffic officer was on life support late Saturday.

He was wanted on a no-bail warrant for assault with a deadly weapon probation violation.

“The guy went down fighting. I wonder why?”

Dunno. And since he has assumed room temperature, we can’t ask him, so we may never know.

But I recall back in the 70’s, when I worked for a brief time for the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police, any cop killer had about 1 chance in 10 of being taken alive. Indeed, almost the only way he could expect to survive was to go to a lawyer and make arrangements to turn himself in to the District Attorney.

In any event, I’m scarcely going to mourn the loss.

I am still curious what type rifle the perp used when he shot through the closet door in the apartment building.

Probably. But some were head shots.

Just how long is Lovelle’s rap sheet? I just did a search and came up empty. Here in WI, we have an official gov’t site (ccap) where you can look this stuff up. I tried for a California version of ccap and found little of any worth. Different articles I found had his age varying. Full name Lovelle Mixon, age 26 or 27. If any Freepers in CA can provide the ccap website to look up this dirtbag’s list of crimes, please reply to me. He took 4 good young men. Prayers for their families, friends and co-workers. RIP. Lovelle is in hell. Hope it’s really really a bitch.

I don't believe it.

Anytime I hear the words “assault rifle” and no details regarding the rifle itself, then I am 99% sure that the reporter is just repeating something told to him.

I seriously doubt that 90% of reporters even know what an assault rifle is,
They probably only have an idea what it looks like.

and to them - and most of the poorly educated masses, that is enough.

Can’t be a black gun. Isn’t there an assault weapons ban in Kalifornia?
