WASHINGTON, March 20, 2009 Two U.S. Navy vessels, a submarine and a surface ship, collided in the Strait of Hormuz today, according to a U.S. Navy news release.
The collision involved the USS Hartford, a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine, and the USS New Orleans, an amphibious ship, according to a release issued by the Bahrain-based U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet.
The Hartfords nuclear propulsion plant was unaffected by the collision.
Fifteen submariners aboard the Hartford were slightly injured and have been returned to duty, the release said. No servicemembers aboard the New Orleans were injured.
The New Orleans reportedly sustained damage to a diesel fuel tank, which caused a leakage of about 25,000 gallons of fuel.
The incident is under investigation.
The Strait of Hormuz is a relatively narrow and strategic corridor of water that connects the Middle Easts Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The Hormuz Strait is bordered by the Iranian coast to the north and the United Arab Emirates and a part of Oman to the south.

Like I mentioned in another thread, this is like the 5th or 6th such naval collision in the very recent past.
One case involved a light-house, IIRC.

Verify range to target with a single ping.

My guess is the bubbleheads got too shallow when shadowing the target. Those Straits don’t leave too much room for error.

Do you think the terrorists might be hacking into our navigation system?
I know it sounds “Conspiracy Theorist” but there was an incident a few days ago where a ship hit construction debris. We have the most advanced ships in the world and I know mistakes do occur, but I find it a little strange.

Ever notice how in any mishap at sea involving U.S. naval vessels, the initial comments are always about dashed officers’ careers?
That’s becaue the Navy officer corps has long been described as the most aristocratic and the most cannibalistic of all the services.
I offer in evidence the careers of Admiral Husband Kimmel and the skipper of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.

How it happened will be the big question of the Admiralty Board to find out.

Yep, and those sifting, sandy/murky bottoms can change drastically requiring extra diligence when shadowing.

One case involved a light-house, IIRC. Aren't light houses there so ships will AVOID them?

How’s this theory.
The sub was trying to use the surface ship as sonar cover in order to sneak through the Straits unnoticed.
