Fewer people are seeking asylum in Sweden, with the number of applications dropping 33 percent last year, according to new statistics.
"During 2008, 24,342 persons sought asylum in Sweden, which is a decrease of 11,865 applications compared to 2007," Statistics Sweden (SCB) said in a statement on Friday.
Two-thirds of applicants were men and one-third were women, a common proportion since 2000, it added.
Over 100 nationalities were represented among the asylum seekers. The largest group was Iraqis who accounted for a quarter of applications.
However, SCB noted that the number of Iraqi asylum seekers was down dramatically.
"Iraqis represented over half of the applications in 2007," it said.
The second-largest group was Somalis, with 14 percent of applications.
Sweden, which has in recent years taken in more Iraqis than any other Western country, tightened its asylum policy in 2007, ruling it could legally send people back to that country as well as to other conflict-ridden areas, such as parts of Somalia and Afghanistan.
Immigration authorities ruled in 2007 that "there is no armed conflict in Iraq" and that it was therefore acceptable to repatriate Iraqi citizens.
Asylum seekers from Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan now must prove they are personally threatened at home to be given asylum in Sweden.

Speaking of people fleeing from Somalia, probably the least civilized nation on Earth, I wonder what my country has to offer them that neighboring Saudi Arabia can't provide them with.
On Saudi Arabian soil that is.
Saudi Arabia apparently doesn't welcome refugees from Somalia, yet the Saudis don't mind contributing millions of dollars to Muslim missionary work abroad like sending Imams to countries like Sweden in order to convince Somali asylum seekers here that they must isolate themselves (and especially their women) from the “infidels” and trying to form Muslim enclaves. Furthermore, the Saudis are very willing to fund mosques being built on Swedish soil (like the $10 one that the Muslims in my city, Gothenburg, have been granted a permission to build - although the project constantly gets delayed because of all the pig carcasses that somehow keep turning up at the site).
If Somalia is the least civilized country on Earth, then Saudi Arabia qualifies as the most hypocrite.
Rich and powerful infidels are welcome to Saudi Arabia as long as they leave their religious attributes and customs at home, while Muslims from neighboring nations, fleeing from wars, definitely are not.
Saudi Arabia seems like a close friend of certain Western governments and various officials in Christian countries working from PC guidelines, but I can't see how this nation ever could become a friend of Christianity.
It took the longest to realize this wasn’t about Iraqois admitting themselves to asylums.
