HARARE, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and a longtime opposition leader-turned-finance minister made an unusual joint appeal Thursday for $5 billion (euro3.66 billion) in international aid to revive Zimbabwe's shattered economy.
The two men presented an economic recovery program that scraps the stringent price controls which have fueled a black market and spiraling inflation. It also sets up "safety nets and social protection for vulnerable groups exposed to market forces," Finance Minister Tendai Biti said, without offering details.
The longtime opponents disagreed, however, over the causes of the country's economic meltdown.
Biti said Zimbabwe had to do its part by restoring democratic freedoms and the rule of law and demanded that a new wave of seizures of white-owned farms in recent weeks blamed on Mugabe loyalists stop.

Didn’t think there were that many white owned farms left. Who are these fools?
The congress and Obama will probably send them a bailout.
The republicans will bitch because the dems want to send too much, and will offer alternative legislation, that would cut the bailout by half...
Obama will try to give it to him.
Chutzpah.
die a miserable and slow death, you genocidal racist pig f*cker
i believe that is the strongest worded phrase i have ever typed here on FR. i apologize to any kiddies that stumbled across the utterance.... but it is what i feel.
Keep this in mind. Mr. Obama will be calling for price controls in the very near future despite the overwhelming evidence from around the world and even this country that price controls destroy economies.
What a great democrat this thug would make.
No problem, just send them 5 Billion Zimbabwe dollars
I think a postage stamp costs more!
May you and Teddy Kennedy share a ride home from a bar on Cape Cod. This time, let Teddy’s seatbelt get stuck.
“”Every brain damaged liberal I knew was talking about how wonderful Rhodesia was going to be when it was turned over to black rule. They talked about it being a wonderful place.””
The same with the Belgian Congo. Read Tim Butcher’s Blood River and see how far backward the Congo has gone since their independence. Excellent story about a journalist who duplicated Stanley’s trail down the Congo.
There are grandfathers in that country now who tell their grandchildren about the good life they had in the “old days.” Their grandkids can’t imagine such marvels as motor bikes, enough food and such. Will those people never learn?
The journalist met a man who showed up to work in a train station every day and asked him when the last train went through there. The answer, “15 years ago.” They have workers who have nothing but a well inked stamp pad and a rubber stamp to give permission to do certain things - such as walk down the streets or take a picture. They have people in the villages who are called “Person of Importance” who must approve of anything and everything.
We have such people in Washington, DC and they all deserve this new title wrapped right around their necks.
Why even set conditions. At this point it’s best to let him know in no uncertain terms that we’re not interested in bailing him out. PERIOD.

Nice to see that the media is still covering for Mugabe. The AP is reporting that “some whites have been driven violently from their properties and homes and farms have been looted since Mugabe ordered a land distribution campaign in 2000.&rdquo” Actually, “On 8th August 2002, 93% of Zimbabwe’s commercial farmers have been ordered to leave their farms, their homes and their livelihoods.” I suppose 93% could be considered “some.” Of course the fall in agricultural production is the result of a lack of rain. Zimbabwe has actually improved dramatically under Mugabe. Through the ingenious economic policies of Gideon Gono there are uncounted billionaires in Zimbabwe, even trillionaires. According to the U.N. life expectancy has been raised from about 60 year all the way up to about 30. Many of these policies could be adopted by the Obama Administration to bring these improvements to the U.S.
Please apologize to pigs. And the crazy left makes excuses for this murderer.
ok... is that $1 trillion note real? do they actually have such a thing?
