Send in the Troops (Who ordered U.S. Army soldiers into an Alabama town?)
Fox News - Glenn Beck ^ | 3/18/2009

Posted on 03/18/2009 3:15:00 PM PDT by nevergore

After the shooting of 11 people in the South Alabama town last week, regular US Army troops helped to provide law enforcement.

This was one of the lead stoies on Glenn Beck today.

It is unthinkable that a post Provost Marshal would (1) even think about doing this and (2) do it without the Post Cdr’s permission. It is unthinkable that a Post Commander would contenance this action without approval from his/her higher HQ. And so on.

If this was a good buddy kind of thing the US Army officer who authorized it should be court martialed yesterday.

If a governor accepted US Army law enforcement assistance he/she has no idea why he/she is commander-in-chief of the National Guard, is just stupid or some combination of the above. Last I heard Alabama was a red state. There is no way a Pubbie governor would sanction the US Army swerving into his lane unless a calamity beyond imagining occured. Although the multiple killings were tragic they were not calamitous.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out—assuming it even happened. I read a few days back that there are stories out there about US Army soldiers being involved in mysterious road blocks or whatever that had nothing to do with a military exercise per se. Perhaps, this just more grist for that mill.

Glenn Beck’s staff researched this issue, they also have direct reports (both internal and external) and pictures.

I have little doubt it happened, just why.....

Administrative civil authority sends troops and pulls them.

Period.

If the AL governor did not know, which perhaps he would not, it was not the state of AL.

It had to be federal.

Dry run. Precedent.

Opinion:
Small town urban combat drill seeing if troops would obey/shoot and what the people of the small town would do.

“Nationhood is slowly being stripped away, and with it go Constitutional safeguards. “

The shame is probably less than 2% of citizens are paying attention to issues like this.

60% of citizens don’t care. 18% care but are too busy just getting along with life.

20% are so left that they can’t wait until the country is brazenly taken over by, and declared a Peoples Republic of the United States.

So sad......

They were not National Guard but regular Army. The Alabama Govenor when contacted was completely unaware of the situation.

Could they have been the Mexican army and that's why the governor was not aware? After all, the Mexicans are known for military intrusions across our mutual border.

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody did get wheeled in for this one, if that's what happened.

I'm just saying there are possible explanations other than a dry run for martial law or a plot of some kind.

I’m afraid we’re all but there already. Quite the pinch they’ve got us in, and with the complicity of many purported “conservatives” in elected office.

They’re still concerned about being exposed, though, so control isn’t consolidated. Destitute and desperate should just about do the trick ... FDR, take two.

What was the purported threat, requiring such an incursion? A single nutcase with a gun, who was killed, was supposed to wreak complete havoc on social order afterward, in a small, southern town?

One thing that nobody wants to discuss is it was possible that the minuscule police department thought this was more than a single gunman, possibly a group of armed individuals, there may have been a panicked phone call to the nearest group of people thus the Army that was very close to get there ASAP. I don’t think they had any SWAT capability.

I would rather see this happen than waiting an hour or two for SWAT to show up and they sit while dozens of people are being slaughtered.

So if there was a mass mall/school shooter on the loose and an Army or Marines base is just a few miles away we cannot use them because we fear posse comitatis? (sp?)

You might not want to rely on Posse Comitatus too much.

H.R. 5122: 109th Congress John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007

Section 1076 -

Revises federal provisions allowing the President to utilize the Armed Forces in connection with interference with federal and state law to allow the President to employ the Armed Forces and National Guard in federal service to restore public order in cases of natural disaster, epidemic or other public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or domestic violence. Requires the President to notify Congress within 14 days of the exercise of such authority. Authorizes the President, when exercising such authority, to direct the Secretary to provide supplies, services, and equipment to persons affected by the situation.

Are you implying that the President was involved in this decision? The guy was dead, threat eliminated. What need of restoration was there, as far as public order?

I’m not implying anything. I posted information as to the current status of Posse Comitatus in U.S. law. Take it or leave it.
