Well said, InABunkerUnderSF. There's actually a parallel with some ancient societies in that. Rome started to be dismantled for its marble centuries before its fall. Emperor after emperor made laws and specified punishments for "urban quarrying", which mostly went on at night (because quite early on, at least as early as Augustus, cart traffic was forbidden in daylight to reduce street congestion), and target buildings were typically underused public buildings. |
