Mexico slaps tariffs on US products in dispute [McCain expresses regret]
AFP ^ | 2009-03-16

MEXICO CITY (AFP) — Mexico on Monday said it would place tariffs on nearly 90 US products after Washington canceled a program that allowed some trucks from Mexico to operate in the United States.

There is to be an "increase in customs duty on almost 90 industrial and agricultural products," Economy Minister Gerardo Ruiz Mateos said in a statement.

Ruiz said the increase would represent some 2.4 billion dollars, but did not name the products.

. . . . .

The move drew a sharp rebuke from US Senator John McCain, who said he regretted Mexico's decision and also lashed out at US President Barack Obama and lawmakers for backing "protectionist" policies.

"I deeply regret the action taken by the Mexican government and the harm it may cause to American businesses," said McCain, who lost his bid for the presidency in 2008 to Obama.

"Unfortunately, this is a predictable reaction by the Mexican government to a policy that now puts the United States in clear violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement," he added.

"We must take steps to prevent escalation of further protectionist measures -- actions that only serve to harm American business during these tough economic times when these businesses need a worldwide marketplace to prosper."

Under regular circumstances, you’d be able to blame the bailouts for making people believe that billions of dollars is chump change. But there are people who treated billions of dollars as chump change here on FR before the first bailout was even a gleam in Hank Paulson’s eye.

If left up to the protectionists it would be interesting to see who else they would cut off from our exports. I'm sure they'd happily stop shipping any country with which we have a trade deficit -- playing field not being level and all.

Just think how many more people we could shift from the private to the public sector. Obama, and his merry band of statists could be in control for life.

I think the single most amusing thing I see on these threads is the attitude: someone thinks, "if I say this forcefully enough it must be true." They never understand that they believe what they believe as an article of faith.

There was a Wal-Mart thread a few days ago, where someone exclaimed something along the lines of "if Wal-Mart likes Mexico so much, it should open stores there!" I looked at the Wal-Mart website and discovered that Wal-Mart has well over a thousand locations in Mexico. Gave me a real chuckle.

Yea, lets retaliate.

A “tariff” on all monies sent to Mexico, excellent idea!

Another step is to stop Mexicans from owning land in the USA.

Americans can't own land in Mexico, seems fair.

So let's "nationalize" mexican owned properties in the US.

But it seems that US politicians job description is to kowtow to Mexico and let them continue to colonize our country.

That’s not what we’re talking about here, unless you believe the Mexicans are bringing our tech back to us.

Yes the information is freely available there. And it documents exactly what i claimed. Now again, what part of it is not accurate in your angry Reagan-Hating opinion?

Fixed!

About 1/2 of what it costs annually to have 20 million illegals here sponging off services and filling our prisons. Not to mention the costs to the multitudes of US citizens who are the victims of the illegal aliens - crime victims and displaced workers alike.

Not to mention the fact that we have a 65 billion trade deficit with Mexico. Not to mention the 10s of 1000s of manufacturing jobs that departed for Mexico. Not to mention the staggering drug traffic coming in from Mexico. Not to mention 10s of billions that are sent “home” each year by illegal mexican workers. Not to mention the tons of poop and garbage left on US citizens property where the hordes of illegal pass thru. Not to mention the crime riddled drug gangs whose reach extends well into the US, especially in our border towns.

My suggestion - move to mexico if you like it so much.

No, because if I want to check someone's math, I want to know the name of the lefty whose math I'm checking.

In any case, our GDP was so much lower during the 1930's that you can't dismiss a 3 or 4% drop as easily as you wish. What would be the equivalent drop now? Think about it.

You are trumpeting Reagan as an unabashed free trader. Reagan was much wiser than that.

You figure those Mexican truck drivers are in line to buy a new ‘Chevy’???

No they are lining up to buy Fords....:^)

From wiki...

...to assemble the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ in Hermosillo, Sonora.

So you’ve proved that reducing free trade harms America. I agree and think that free trade actually helps. We need to educate the anti-free traders on FR.

That won't happen. But it's fun to whack the hornet's nest with a stick when they get too emotional.
