Householders who put 'the wrong sort of rubbish' in their bins are to face re-education visits from council officers at their homes.
They will be told how they are failing to recycle properly and will be encouraged to 'do better'.
Bureaucrats are using microchips placed in bins to measure the volume of rubbish thrown away - and the contents may also be analysed in a search for plastic, glass or other items that should have been recycled instead.
Those who break strict rules will first be contacted in writing, but may be confronted by a council officer on their doorstep if they offend again.
The first council to announce such a scheme denies the new policy is a 'Big Brother' totalitarian-style move - but has admitted the chips could one day be used to charge householders on the volume of rubbish discarded.
Many other councils - many of which have already reduced rubbish collections to once a fortnight, leading to problems with rats and other vermin - are likely to follow with similarly intrusive schemes. Some 2million bin chips have now been fitted.
But it is the visits by council officers to suburban doorsteps that, say critics, smack of the 're-education' brainwashing schemes undertaken in communist China.
Many local authorities have shied away from trialling the use of tiny microchips in wheely bins - but some environmentalists remain keen on the eventual introduction of a 'pay as you throw' tax, with the volume of rubbish measured by the chips determining extra tax bills.
South Oxfordshire council is currently putting the postage-stamp size chips in some 56,000 bins, and will start delivering them later this month for a programme that will begin in June.

They are literally worried about trash instead of their failing socialism and the radical Muslims in their midst. It’s got to be absolutely maddening to the conservative British with any commonsense.
Civil disobedience dictates that everyone smash or otherwise disable these chips.
Then tell the reeducation commissars to f*ck off and close the door.
When that comes to the US, and it surely will, I will be happy to invite them to sort through my garbage, out at the curb mind you. They can play with it, save it, sort it, take it home with them. But, I will be doing as I do today, throwing it all in a bag and putting it in the trash bin. From there, enjoy yourselves with it as you may.
Ok, what is the technology to disable these chips, or better yet, reprogram them to show whatever you want?
I say put the trash miscreants up against the wall and shoot em. Or—off with their heads!!!!! The next thing you know urinals will be outlawed like they did in Sweden or Norway a few years back.
Reason: Women complained that standing while urinating was a demonstration of the unequal power men had over women. And the “men” went along without a wimper.

Around here the sorted waste is only valauable if you pay someone to haul it away. No recyclers want it anymore. Costs more to ship than it’s worth.
Here’s the solution: Just put your garbage into all of those “Wal-mart” style shopping bags that pile up in your home. Anytime you leave the house, take a bag of garbage with you and throw it into a public trash can. As long as you don’t put your garbage in a hefty bag, it just looks like you are throwing away the stuff that built up in your car. This also saves you the money that you would have spent on trash bags.

On their off days these ‘city council inspectors’ are practicing their silly walks.

The problem is, they have turned England into a laboratory. Then they bring it over here. :(
Not the visits, but notices of intent to fine happen in Raleigh, NC. My mother has had a few warning her for putting recyclables in the trash bin and leaving lids on her water bottle in the recycle bin. Then there was the one about the cardboard moving boxes which had to be cut down to 3’ by 3’ size. For heavens sake, she’s 75 years old!
They are picking up trash every 2 weeks, and experiencing rat problems. Can epidemics of related diseases be far behind? Have they learned nothing, or do they simply not care?
It is exactly the same technology your grandfather used to take care of his garbage -- fire.
Living in the country, I have a burn barrel. They sell them at the local farm supply store. Metal 55 gallon drum. No top, cut a big air hole in the bottom. Set it on concrete blocks and fill with garbage of all sorts. Add a quart of diesel fuel and light. The most satisfying part is to wave middle finger skyward and say: "This is for you, greenies."
We had an onerous garbage pick up fee in one city we lived in. Everyday when I left for work I took a garbage bag and dumped it in a public dumpster. We did shred all the mail.
Resist.
Microchips can be recalibrated with a propane torch.
A hammer, blow torch, scissors. Strictly a low-tech solution for this one.
