MIAMI, March 16 -- Mauricio Funes, a former TV newsman who was recruited to run for president, declared himself the winner of El Salvador's presidential contest Sunday night, bringing into power a leftist party built by former guerrillas and ending two decades of conservative rule.
Funes, a dynamic speaker and political outsider who compares himself to President Obama and pledged to be an agent of change in the small Central American nation, was leading the polls late Sunday night with 51.2 percent of the vote and more than 90 percent of the ballots counted. Turnout was high and election day was mostly calm.
If the lead holds, Funes and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) will take control of a nation struggling with an economic crisis and a murder rate that is among the highest in the world. The country has also suffered through 12 years of civil war, which left more than 70,000 people dead.

They always make the best leftists.
I hear that when he hears himself speak he gets a thrill up his leg.
So, what has ARENA done lately? I haven’t heard much since Roberto D’Aubuisson died. Things have a tendency to get violent down there. Looks like we’ve been caught asleep again.
Venezuela doesn’t have any money and can not support another money sucking socialiat failed state! You are going to have a rough time doing anything for your people! Good luck! (sarc)
“Twelve Years of Civil War”
Yeah, right. More like twelve years of leftist violence, murder, hatred and psychotic rejection of Christianity.
IMHO
I used to joke about CNN being the Communist News Network and now, guess what? It turns out that one of it’s own is a hard core marxist communist that is now in power in South America.
We will soon have to talk about a “failed continent”, or a failed Latin America. Sadly, progress or lack thereof in the region is measured by the number of dictatorships and leftist autocracies present. We are now about par for the course. Most of the region’s entrepreneurs, few though they are, are already living in Miami.
Leftist Declares Victory in El Salvador Election?
Can He be president in the US and El Salvador? I don’t get it.
None of this would be happening if some “rogue element” had taken out the Castros and Chavez! We can only hope that the people of Cuba find a way to revolt!
Slow to catch on down there aren't they?
People deserve the leaders they elect.
Too bad for Nicaraugans. Attention Americans...Get the hell out of there.
as far as outside funding possibly true, but the underlying issues which get leftists into power in places like el salvador have a lot to do with local politics, and in my experience the mind-bogglingly blatant corruption of the traditional oligarchies/ruling parties, connected then to the abject poverty (not US-style, but dirt-floor-style) the bulk of the population concurrently enjoys.
Just like here, it’s going to be going to hell in a handbasket.
declared himself the winner of El Salvador's presidential contest
Darn, and I was just going to declare myself the winner! He beat me to it.
This is about El Salvador, not Nicaragua. Nicaragua has had a leftist President, Daniel Ortega, for several years. El Salvador has had a conservative government for 20 years.
pledged to be an agent of change in the small Central American nation and send more MS-13 gang members to U.S.A.
Unfortunately, much of the hate towards Christianity was perpetrated by the Right — including assasinating the Archbishop of San Salvador and the infamous rape and murder of nuns.
