* People overwhelmed by gloomy data * Reverting to doing nothing * "Fear society is not up to challenge"
SCIENTISTS say they are haunted by the failure to convey to the world just how close Earth is to climate catastrophe.
Top researchers who gathered in Copenhagen for a climate change conference said they were worried that people could not psychologically deal with the enormity of the problem and were reverting to doing nothing.
French glaciologist Claude Lorius, one of the first scientists to publish in 1987 evidence that global warming was real said he despaired of getting the message across.
"At first, I thought that we could convince people. But there is a terrible inertia,'' he said.
"I fear that society is not up to the challenge of a crisis like this. Today, as a human being I am pessimistic.''
John Church, an expert on sea levels at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystem Cooperative Research Centre in Hobart, took an equally dim view of our collective capacity for denial.
"Perhaps society has realised the seriousness, but it certainly hasn't realised the urgency,'' he said.
"But even if you are pessimistic - and sometimes I am - it does not help. What are you going to do? Chop off your hands and give up? That's not a solution either,'' he said.

Who are all these psychologically unstable people out there with their doomsday complexes? Some guy thinks that God is going to visit retribution on the earth in the form of earthquakes and violent weather, he’s a nut. Some guy thinks that carbon dioxide is going to visit retribution on the earth in the form of violent weather and rising seas, he’s a gritty, determined scientist? Get lost, you envirofruit. There’s a few guys riding around on the Hale Bopp comet intersted in your opinion, we’re all sick of it here on earth.
No, being a disbeliever means you’re mentally sound. This article makes it obvious that believing that humankind has the ability to control the climate has a very unbalancing effect on one’s mental health.
My biggest hope is that one day we’ll rename ‘April Fools Day’ to ‘Global Warming Scientist Day’
Look, if the climate change alarmists are really right about this stuff then Nature has a corrective measure that works every time. It might not be a good thing for the human race but it works. On the other hand, I have every reason to be suspicious when some chicken little types tell me the sky is falling based on computer models that are consistently proven inadequate when their predictions are compared to real world data.
That’s because they keep using their own fabricated and grossly exaggerated data to create new data for the coming period.
No wonder their World is crumbling around them, while ours is still here and quite normal. But really, they are now in panic mode because they have not convinced the rest of the World to run screaming for the cliffs. (Yet, that is.)
Be like other religious fanatics and develop a taste for Kool-Aid?
That totally describes me.

Granted, sunbathing on a warm Arctic beach would be great, too.
Doctor: That spot on your arm could be gangreen, the test came back positive but it has a 99% false positive rate. We need to cut your arm off immediately.
Patient: Er, no thanks.
I think we have a winner!
They've been screaming global warming for over a decade, and there's just no evidence for it. People don't buy it because what evidence we do have indicates that the earth is entering a cooling phase.
No, it’s far more critical than that. If you don’t believe this stuff, ultimately it means you’re afraid of the depths of your own fear. To overcome the fear of denial, one must deny the onset of fear, only denying the denial of fear to the extent one can hope for change from the fear of denial. Because it is only government that can create the environment for changing hope; from the fear of denial, of course, in an equal fashion leaving no denyer behind. And it is only to the extent that each of us, working together, while alone, yet in tandem, can face the changing hope of fearing denial as we confront the denial of fear, until one day our community fears will be like leaves who hoped for another Spring but got only change, waiting around in the gutter to be gathered up, bagged, and burned.
