Fairfax, Va. -- The National Park Service has announced its intention to ban traditional ammunition containing lead in all its parks. The move would needlessly push hunters to use more costly ammo like tungsten, copper, and steel. The restrictions, set to take affect by the end of 2010, were announced without regard to science or soliciting feedback from sportsmens’ groups.
"The NPS announcement demonstrates either complete ignorance or complete arrogance as to the effect that this policy will have on hunters,” says Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. “There is no science to support NPS' contention that the use of lead ammunition in hunting is causing environmental contamination, having a negative effect on wildlife, or posing a threat to the health of visitors or park staff. This policy, and the lack of communication in advance with the sportsmen's community, is a deliberate attempt to reduce the number of people who will want to hunt in the 60 parks that are open to hunting. This plays directly into the hands of radical anti-hunting organizations like the Humane Society of the US which is advocating that hunters be banned from using lead ammunition."
The NRA will continue to be a voice of opposition against this unnecessary action and is committed to protecting the rights of hunters to use the ammo that is best suited for their hunting needs and budget.

But if you want a 9mm in steel core, OMG! My hunting ammo in 30.06 will penetrate 3/8 plate easily. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that even with a vest. I have also gone through 9 inch pine trees with the same load. Much is made of the Barrett .50's, but normal .460 Weatherby mag rounds are very near the same ballistics as far as normal shooting is concerned. The Barrett is fine looking, has better range and ballistics, but I wouldn't want to be hit with a .460 either. Arguing over a few foot lbs. is irrelevant when talking about armor piercing. I think most rifle rounds above AK or .30.30 will probably penetrate a vest. These "powerful assault" rounds are really just a little more than pistol energies.
To get their panties in a knot over a .223 in steel is ridiculous.

But the Genie is already out of the bottle. Millions of SS109 green tip rounds are held by private citizens. These are made to NATO specs, moisture sealed and in all likelihood will still be potent 100 years from now. And our guns!! We are close to having 300 million guns! One million have been purchased just since Obamy was elected. Guns are like safes. If you oil them, they will last forever. So the revolution will go on. Long after we have passed from this earth, our descendants will march on. And they will possess what we have passed on to them. Millions of guns, and tens of millions of rounds of ammunition.
Tungsten is an armor piercing element. It is considered a “Cop Killer” bullet if the bullet has that in it.
Like I said, the gun grabbers will use any angle. The lead ammo ban in the National Parks is silly if they were honestly looking at a pollution issue.

My understanding is that there are already laws on the books to phase out lead in fishing weights... and some waters already ban the use of lead.

nothing at your link. However, there is a push to ban all imported gun stuff manufactured anywhere in the world. So, even if you find something that is not on the banned list it may very well be illegal to obtain or own.
I was wondering how much hunting goes on in national parks?
FR underwent a revision that makes old links a pain. I have found if I try them a bunch of times with multiple clicks I can get them to open. I had tested that link before posting and the file is there.
I don’t know of any National Park that allows hunting so what difference does it make?
FWIW, I use Remington copper sabots in my 20 gauge slug gun and have killed 4 deer with single shots up to 65 yards.

Elemental lead is quite in inherit. A spent round will gather a coating of insoluble lead oxide and remain intact forever. There is a lot of lead in the earth's crust, so if it was as bad as the whack-os make it out to be, we should all be dead.

The NPS Nazis pull this kind of cr*p all the time. No comments allowed; they just do it. The fascists tried to ban motorboats from Isle Royale NP back in the 1990s, even though allowing motorboats was a condition of the state giving the islands to the NPS. Boaters had to spend $600,000 in legal fees fighting these federal pigs. The boaters won eventually.
I'll bet the owner / employees of that gun shop smelled a BATFE setup. Unfortunately, that paranoia isn't at all unjustified. A simple "No, we don't sell that" would have sufficed.
