2009 NHRA Full Throttle Championship Drag Racing Schedule For Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock cars there are twenty-four(24) racing events in the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Series divided between a regular season and playoffs format. The regular season eighteen(18) Countdown to 10 races concludes at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Indianapolis. The final six(6) playoffs Countdown to 1 races begins at the NHRA Nationals, Charlotte and concludes at the NHRA Finals, Pomona. After the first 18 races, only the top 10 drivers in each of the divisions advance to the Countdown to 1, based on total points won. Their points are reset to within 10 of each another except for the points leader who will have a 30-point advantage over second place. The drivers will then compete for NHRA Full Throttle Championships. Drivers earn NHRA national event points as follows: Winner 100; Runner-up 80; Third-round loser 60; Second-round loser 40; First-round loser 20. Additional points are awarded at national events as follows: 10 points to all contestants - 1 qualifying run required. Qualifying positions earn points as follows: 1st 8; 2nd 7; 3rd 6; 4th 5; 5th & 6th 4; 7th & 8th 3; 9th thru 12th 2; 13th thru 16th 1. For the highly popular Pro Stock Motorcycles, they follow the same championship format as the other three divisions. However, their 2009 regular season is twelve(12) Countdown to 10 races, which begins at the legendary NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville. Their Countdown to 1 playoffs is the final five(5) races, which like the other three divisions, begins at the NHRA Nationals, Charlotte, and concludes at the NHRA Finals, Pomona. However, they do not race at the October 9-11th Virginia NHRA Nationals, Richmond. ~ fla

Legendary Kenny Bernstein undergoes back surgery -- Doctors at Hoag Hospital performed back surgery today on six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein to relieve stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal. The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team owner had been suffering from pain in his lower back and numbness in his legs. After undergoing a battery of tests, doctors determined surgery was needed to correct the trauma and inflammation that was causing the pain. As part of the recuperative process, travel has been precluded for the next few weeks. It is expected that in addition to the Topeka event, he will miss Chicago and Englishtown. "It seems that the years of driving race cars have taken a bit of a toll on my back," Bernstein said. "This isnt unusual as many drivers suffer from back ailments after years of absorbing vibration from these 8,000-horsepower engines. "Well get this turned around and well be back out with the team soon.
Prayers from all of us for a speedy recovery King. ~ fla
P.S. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit, Kenny will be inducted into Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

For some reason, when Ashly Force lost in the final on Sunday I was not surprised.
Congrats to Pedragon for a great win however.

None of us like 1,000 feet nitro racing but there were some "redeeming values" at the NHRA Spring Nationals, Houston Raceway Park, when the blown Pro Mods ran.

Its just not the same with the nitro cars only racing 1000 feet. I decided to save my money and not attend this year. Its the first time in six years I havent atttended the OReilly Natls.

Public Release of the Big Sounds of the Drags Los Angeles, CA In the spirit of what is known as Creative Commons, the Nitronic Research founders have released the entire body of NRs ambient sound f/x recording, The Big Sounds of the Drags 2001″ for free public consumption. More than than just a fetishistic exercise in audio drag porn, the Big Sounds is made up of 37 distinct recordings, ranging from the intimate and ambient sounds of Top Fuel dragsters, Funny Cars, Fuel Altereds, Jet Cars, Wheelstanders and doorslammers, interspersed with interviews from drag racing luminaries such as Big Daddy Don Garlits, Wild Bill Alexander, Roland Leong, Dean Skuza, Ron Capps, Techno Tim Gibson and others, all of which is sporadically underscored by surf music. It was engineered, recorded, mixed and mastered by Ikky Shivers and Cole Coonce.
Good stuff, check it out ~ fla

The SuperNationals is one of NHRAs original seven national events. It's the 5th oldest, tied with the Gatornationals. Numerous NHRA records have been set along with many memorable moments. Like Gainesville, many retired drag racing legends show up in the pits at Englishtown. The race is held at a historic facility and has some of the sports most knowledgeable, and definitely the most boisterous, fans. The event, once known as the Summernationals, has shifted on the schedule from its original scorching hot and humid July slot to June. It's the final chance for Pro Stock teams to earn points toward making the field for the K&N Horsepower Challenge. Until last year, when I thought of Englishtown I always thought of NHRA super legend Joe Amato (NHRA #9 Greatest). He won many races and set records at this track. Now, the SuperNationals will always be remembered for when God took Scott Kalitta from us in 2008. Due to his loss, and being the 40th anniversary of this event, there will be a number of special individuals in attendance this weekend that drag racing fans may not have seen in a long time. In the off-season, the track's emergency shut-down area was improved. The gravel trap was rebuilt, new durable catch nets that are twice as tall as the previous ones were installed, and all fencing was replaced and updated. ~ fla About Old Bridge Township Raceway Park: It all started when Vincent and Louis Napp, along with Vincent's sons, Vincent Jr. and Richard, had a vision to introduce major league drag racing to the New York Metropolitan area. After an exhaustive search for the ideal location, they chose a 308-acre farm in the scenic countryside of Madison Township, New Jersey (now known as Old Bridge Township), on which to erect their racing surface, timing tower, grandstands, and refreshment facilities. Work commenced, and by late spring of 1965 the immense project was nearing completion. Today, more than 40 years since its opening day in July, Raceway Park has grown into a 500-plus acre multi-functional motorsports entertainment venue. It now features two drag strips (1/4 mile and 1/8 mile), three motocross tracks, a 1.3 mile road course track, competition kart racing track, autocross, ride & drive site, airport and more. In addition to the many NHRA-sanctioned drag racing events it hosts, including the NHRA SuperNationals, Raceway Park also presents a full schedule of motorsport events that run from March through November. Some of these include motocross racing, ATV racing, Quad racing, motorcycle drag racing, our annual Englishtown Swap Meet & Auto Show, and the largest monster truck shows in NJ. Englishtowns Raceway Park is currently owned and managed by the third generation of Napp family members. Like their grandfathers, fathers, and uncles before them, they look forward to a bright future.

Legendary NHRA Chief Starter Rick "The Iceman" Stewart "Ice" is one of the unsung legends that emerged from the Lions Drag Strip golden years along with Snake, Ace, Mongoo$e, Connie, and others, that are the foundation of NHRA. He held the Top Fuel speed record in the mid-60's. I don't know anyone that loves this sport more than Rick. I will post more about this rare Texan, including vintage photos and videos, at a later date.
You know you might be a diehard nitro pits fan when. . .

A special FlA & Co. tribute to two-time NHRA Top Fuel Champion Scott Kalitta will be posted after the conclusion of the NHRA SuperNationals.

United Association Union to sponsor Chicago and Englishtown events Tuesday, March 10, 2009
United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA) has secured title-rights sponsorship of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events in Chicago and Englishtown. The United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals will be contested June 4-7 at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago, and the United Association NHRA SuperNationals will take place the following week, June 11-14, at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown. Through NHRAs unique platform and proven ability to personally reach out to fans attending a national event, UA hopes to build awareness for the International Training Fund (ITF) and United Association as well as recruit new members, said Gary Darcy, NHRA senior vice president-sales & marketing.
In addition to sponsoring NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events in Chicago and Englishtown, UA will receive display space at three additional events: the OReilly NHRA Midwest Nationals presented by Castrol at Gateway Intl Raceway in Madison, the OReilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX at Heartland Park Topeka, and the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil at OReilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The interactive display space features welding booths and virtual simulators and is designed to drive awareness for and showcase the benefits of United Association and ITF.
The UA team is thrilled with the partnership we have developed with NHRA, said Michael Arndt, UA director of training. The UA through this new partnership will have access to a yet unexplored group of apprenticeship applicants. These applicants will become a part of our ongoing recruitment effort and supply additional applicants to pipe-trade apprenticeship programs throughout the United States. These apprenticeship programs are in the welding, plumbing, pipefitting, HVACR, and sprinkler-fitting industries of the pipe trades.
In addition to the title-rights sponsorships to the events in Chicago and Englishtown, UA is an associate sponsor on the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Top Fuel dragster driven by Spencer Massey and owned by Don Prudhomme Racing.
About UA Training for the Future: No other organization serves the training needs of the piping industry like UA. For more than a century, UA has been training the most highly qualified workers in the United States and Canada. In the past several decades, UAs training programs have produced a stable, skilled workforce responsible for building and maintaining piping systems in the various industrial and residential facilities that make up the North American landscape. No one can match UAs commitment or investment. The UA spends more than $170 million annually on training-program efforts involving approximately 300,000 journeymen and apprentices in more than 400 local training facilities at any given time. In addition to five-year apprenticeship programs, UA offers continuing education opportunities that include journeyman training and certifications in valve repair, welding, backflow prevention, medical gas installation, safe removal of refrigerants, and many more. - NHRA, Edited by FLA & Co.

Melanie Troxel to debut in Pro Mod at the NHRA SuperNationals, Englishtown
06.09.09, Pro Mod Challenge Series: She holds the honor of being the quickest woman in NHRA history, and most recently graced the seat of a nitro-burning Funny Car, but this weekend, Melanie Troxel will make her debut behind the wheel of an alcohol-burning supercharged Pro Mod, driving for Roger Burgess' R2B2 Racing as part of the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge presented by ProCare Rx as they compete in Englishtown, New Jersey at the United Association NHRA SuperNationals.
Sitting on the sidelines since last November due to lack of sponsorship funding, Troxel said she is "very anxious to get back behind the wheel in competition. "It's been a tough year sitting out, watching everyone else race, it's exciting to get in the car and get back out and get to make some passes," Troxel said. "We've been out testing a couple times with the Pro Mods and just recently in the Voodoo Corvette that I'll be driving this weekend. "I feel really comfortable in the car and I'm very excited to get out there and race," she said. "I had driven an alcohol Funny Car and alcohol Dragster quite a few years ago, so I thought there would be a lot of similarities between those cars and a Pro Mods, and there are mechanically - shifting, doing a lot of that stuff - but I was surprised at the difference from the alcohol cars and the Pro Mod. There's always a learning curve involved any time you move from the different classes, and it's taken me a little re-programming to get used to what the car is telling me. "I've most recently come from the nitro cars that make a ton of horsepower, but they also make a lot of down-force to use all the power, and in contrast, the Pro Mod cars kind of have the feeling of being really light and loose on the track. They get up on the tire a lot and turn a whole lot of rpm's. It's a whole different sensation from nitro," she said.
"Roger has put together a first-class operation, and I feel really fortunate to be a part of the R2B2 Racing team. He and Raymond [Commisso, Troxel's other teammate] have done such a great job this year, that I really feel like I'm trying to live up to the standards they have set. I'm hoping I can keep up with them this weekend. "The idea of having three cars on the track is to gather a little more information, and hopefully benefit all three of us. It's going to be a great weekend, and I know we'll all do very well, especially with Al Billes calling the shots. "I knew of Al when I was driving the Top Alcohol cars, and now that I get the chance to work with him, I'm realizing just what a great guy he is and how much he's done for the sport. It's been a lot of fun so far with all the guys on the team, they make me feel right at home, and it's been a really good learning experience. "Now, I just want to put all that learning to the test and get out on the track and race," Troxel said.
Qualifying is scheduled for 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Friday evening and 2 p.m. Saturday, with eliminations slated to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday evening and conclude Sunday afternoon.

FlA Says: While I am very happy for Melanie, and will continue to closely follow her drag racing career, I/we continue to have no interest in covering the NHRA Pro Mod Series. The cars are too unsafe and I guarantee another PMod driver(s) will be killed if NHRA continues to ignore the problems. This stated, Melanie is a very impressive individual and I/we respect her decision.

06.11.09, Houston Chronicle:
Kalitta Motorsports Carries On -- Returns to track where Scott lost his life: Legendary drag racer and team owner Connie Kalitta celebrated just behind the starting line at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown with a grin from ear-to-ear and celebration hugs from the team after watching son Scott grab his first NHRA Funny Car event victory. That moment came in 1989, when Scott Kalitta, nursing a freshly broken foot from a skiing accident, beat Bruce Larson off the start and then held off the eventual series champion to get the first, and only, Funny Car victory of his career. -- Note: Scott, who is a two-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion(1994, 1995) is one of only 14 drivers to win "Wally's" in both Top Fuel and Funny Car ~ fla)
Now, a little over 20 years later, there will be a few smiles like the one Connie sported that day. But there also will be tears and sadness as the NHRA pulls into Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., for this weekends SuperNationals at the track where Scott lost his life at the age of 46 in a qualifying accident last year. The best way for us to honor Scotts memory and his legacy is to continue to do what he loved, and what we love to do go racing, Connie Kalitta said. We will go into this weekend in Englishtown with our heads held high and remember Scott for what he accomplished both on and off of the race track and most importantly we will be thinking of Scotts greatest accomplishment, his family; his wife, Kathy, and his boys, Corey and Colin.
Scott was killed on June 21 when his car went out of control and crashed during the final round of qualifying for the SuperNationals. Its hard to believe its already been a year, said Doug Kalitta, driver of the No. 50 Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster and Scotts cousin. I think about Scott, his wife Kathy, and his sons Corey and Colin every day. He was definitely one of a kind, and we all miss him a lot. I think the best way to honor his memory is to keep doing what were doing and keep trying to race as hard as we can. After that tragic day last year, the NHRA moved quickly to make the sport safer. The biggest change was the shortening of the race distance for Top Fuel and Funny Car races from 1,320 feet to 1,000. NHRA drag racing has changed in many ways since Scotts accident, and there have been some big strides made in making all of the tracks safer, Doug Kalitta said. There are still many things that need to be addressed, but were all pushing forward to make our sport as safe as we can.
Kalitta Motorsports continued racing the next week with Doug and the Top Fuel team, but the Funny Car team was put on hold. Then in Indianapolis, just seven race weekends later, the KM DHL Funny Car was back at the track with Jeff Arend behind the wheel. Now a year later, Arend will make his first start at Englishtown still seeking his first victory for Kalitta Motorsports. Indy was probably tougher emotionally on me than going to Englishtown this year, although I didnt realize it until right after the first qualifying session and then the flow of emotions hit me pretty hard, Arend said. Englishtown is obviously going to be tough, but my focus now is on winning rather than not making any mistakes with a new team. However, Im sure that what I feel is going to pale in comparison to what the entire Kalitta organization is going to be going through. And while that first win is always special, if Arend can get it this weekend, it will mean even more. There is nothing better than seeing Connie get excited after we make a good lap, and I hope to have him smiling all weekend, Arend said. We have everything we need to win the race. I hope that Scott can give us a hand from above this weekend.

Qualifying Notes:
Ashley Force Hood continues to dominate NHRA Full Throttle qualifying. She has now been No. 1 at four of the last six events. Ashley is the only one of four John Force Racing funny cars that is having a successful season. Top Fuel does not have a full 16 car field. Funny Car has 16 with one driver I've never heard of. New Ford Racing parts are no help to Erica Enders PS team with another DNQ. Shawn Gann got in trouble and drove his pro stock motocycle into the new pea gravel trap and catch net. ## JJ

Agree, Journey thundered. That's because Neal Schon is still the man. They should have been given a 70 or 90 minutes slot. I had not seen their new frontman. The guy is great. He sounds a lot like their heydays frontman Steve Perry. I was impressed how much the massive young crowd was into this '70's founded band. The flashing gals in the crowd were an added bonus *lol*. Here's a couple of live simulcast screen shots. Daughter has you on the email list for your requests. She said the album Journey came out with last year, Revelation, was very good. I was surprised she knew who Journey was. Will have to check it out and see if they are U.S. touring. ~ fla
