Tony West, a high-powered San Francisco lawyer whose clients have ranged from corporate giants to "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh, has been nominated by President Obama as an assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's Civil Division.
West, 43, an Oakland resident, met Obama in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention and was one of his finance co-chairs in California last year, when the campaign raised a record $65 million in the state.
A graduate of Harvard University and Stanford Law School, West worked as a Justice Department attorney under President Bill Clinton, a federal prosecutor in San Francisco and an assistant state attorney general before becoming a litigator at San Francisco's Morrison & Foerster in 2001.

He also took part in the defense of Lindh, the Marin County man who was a 20-year-old Taliban soldier in Afghanistan when he was captured in November 2001. Lindh pleaded guilty in 2002 to serving in the Taliban army and carrying weapons and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
West, who ran unsuccessfully for a state Assembly seat in San Jose in 2000, has acknowledged that the Lindh case dampened his political prospects, but said it was the kind of work he believed in.
"I really believe that in working on that case, I was recommitting myself to those principles of due process, fairness - things that separate us from most nations in the world," he told The Chronicle in an interview last year.
West's wife, Maya Harris, is a former executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California who recently took a job with the Ford Foundation. His sister-in-law is San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris.

Another intense left-winger in the Obama camp — he just becomes more and more transparent with each passing day. He’s stacking the deck at Justice with activist attorneys and I expect him to do the same with U.S. Attorneys offices in the Districts. The fact that this creature represented Lindh is especially grievous — and I don’t want to hear any of that “I had no choice because everybody deserves good legal representation” BS out of him. No lawyer has to represent anyone unless he wants to.
Yet another Affirmative Action Andy just like the great Ocrumbo. His whole family seems to have climbed aboard the gravy train.
Just like an old movie about attack of the killer slime. God I though when they hit bottom they would level for the sake of our Country. Looks like they just brought in a huge power auger to keep going. Wonder if they had to get approval from China to drill on their soon to be property.
Lots of scared folks on this end of the swamp.
There’s no doubt about it: our mortal enemies are at the helm and they’re steering us toward the rocks.
They never were hiding it. They’ve been taking every step with complete confidence in full view of the public.
Most conservatives don’t want to believe that such evil could really exist. Most liberals don’t care as long as they get their check every month.
I would be willing to chip in money to do our own billboards or whatever it takes.
That’s our problem. We don’t want to see it for what it is.
It can’t be long now until Ward Churchill is nominated for some position in the Obama administration. His resume surely has not been overlooked. Maybe Bureau of Indian Affairs. I was going to put /s down but I’m series.

Obama’s Poll Numbers Are Falling
Obama’s policies have caused a severe decrease in his popularity. His approval rating is already below where GW was in 2001! One third are STRONGLY opposed to Obama already!
Most likely this is due to the high degree of fear the public has about his socialist policies!
-69% worry about his increasing government.
-83% worry what he is doing will not work.
-82% worry about the staggering deficit increases.
-more people oppose Obama’s budgit than favor it!
-17% fewer favor government health care than when Clinton proposed it in 1993.
-less than 25% think the government reflects the will of the people! Surprise surprise!
-less than 19% of people think Pelosi, Obama and Reid have passed legislation that will improve their lives! Incredible!
-2/3s of people have more confidence in their own economic judgement than in members of Congress! LOL!
“We face the possibility of substantial gridlock along with an absolute absence of public confidence that could come to mirror the lack of confidence in the American economy that the Dow and the S&P are currently showing.”
Government is in deep trouble! At this stage of the Clinton admistration, Bill was dishing out conservative ideas like a Republican! It helped Clinton immensely. Can you imagine Barrack doing that? Never, he’ a die hard lib.
