Condoleezza Rice said Friday that one of her deepest regrets from her time as secretary of state was the failure of the Bush administration to achieve real reform of immigration laws.
"We need immigration reform. I don't care if it's for the person who crawls across the desert to earn $5 an hour, or for Sergey Brin, who came here from Russia and founded Google," she said at an economic summit at Stanford University. "As a country, we can't have people living in the shadows. It's just wrong. It's not only ineffective, it's wrong."
She said immigrants were critical to the country's financial health, and that reform was needed to fuel the next round of economic growth.
"If we ever lose that and start to believe somehow that it is instead a threat to us to have those people come here, we are going to lose one of the strongest elements not only of our national wealth, but also of our national soul," she said. "One of my biggest regrets was that we were not able to get immigration reform."
Rice's remarks came as she kicked off a daylong conference on the challenges facing the U.S. and global economies. Rice returned to Stanford earlier this month as a political science professor and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution after exiting the Bush administration in January.
Speaking to a crowd that included George Shultz, also a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a former secretary of state, Rice said the global fiscal crisis could shake international confidence in free trade, fiscal discipline and other hallmarks of the financial system the United States has promoted abroad.

I guess that’s why there are 700,000 Latino gangbangers...
You gap-toothed maggot.
To hell with Condi Rice.
Good thing she was a failure!
If you're trying to make a point, you haven't done a very good job. Care to try again?
She’s always been an asshat—and I want to projectile vomit when I think of Bush, at a critical time in our history, window dressing the State Dept. with Spastic Colin Powell and ol’ Melanin Albright here, resulting in 8 years of piss-poor to mediocre performance, with no rise in the black vote for all his pandering, when a good man like John Bolton was relegated to the sidelines.
Black, white, man, woman—GOOD is GOOD and LOUSY is LOUSY
And one more thing—if anyone- ANYONE- is more loyal to something other than America—you can’t represent me. If you’re Italian first, or German first, or Eskimo first, or black first, you need to hang out with your homies and talk your smack, but you can’t run your mouth about “inclusiveness” and then turn around and exclude me.
My point is this living in the shadows aka illegally here must be fixed and and most of the time it is under the guise of the we can not survive with out the low paying labor. That was the same argument used in slavery.
She is a foreign relations expert and why shouldn’t she continue in her field of expertise?
That doesn’t mean that she would betray America or do things that go against our interests.
It saddens me that we are out of office and out of power and her options for serving America are much more limited now, but she gave herself 24/7 to the country for over 8 years and a lot of her life before then. I doubt you or I have done more for America than she has; but it doesn’t sadden me that you and I have our own lives and destiny to live out, even though I’m sure we are both very patriotic.
This is not the first time Condi Rice has exposed her incredible stupidity - or worse. Why did Bush ever pick her?
Ignorance and supidity are not the same.
Condi is not stupid.
