Condi Rice: Immigration reform needed for people who 'crawl across the desert'
Mercury News ^ | 03/13/2009 | Juliana Barbassa

Condoleezza Rice said Friday that one of her deepest regrets from her time as secretary of state was the failure of the Bush administration to achieve real reform of immigration laws.

"We need immigration reform. I don't care if it's for the person who crawls across the desert to earn $5 an hour, or for Sergey Brin, who came here from Russia and founded Google," she said at an economic summit at Stanford University. "As a country, we can't have people living in the shadows. It's just wrong. It's not only ineffective, it's wrong."

She said immigrants were critical to the country's financial health, and that reform was needed to fuel the next round of economic growth.

"If we ever lose that and start to believe somehow that it is instead a threat to us to have those people come here, we are going to lose one of the strongest elements not only of our national wealth, but also of our national soul," she said. "One of my biggest regrets was that we were not able to get immigration reform."

Rice's remarks came as she kicked off a daylong conference on the challenges facing the U.S. and global economies. Rice returned to Stanford earlier this month as a political science professor and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution after exiting the Bush administration in January.

Speaking to a crowd that included George Shultz, also a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a former secretary of state, Rice said the global fiscal crisis could shake international confidence in free trade, fiscal discipline and other hallmarks of the financial system the United States has promoted abroad.

Sorry, dumb ass woman. I really never did think much of her.

The only immigration reform we need is to enforce the immigration laws and send them crawling or packing back to where they came from.

Every country that intends to retain their identity as a nation has restrictions on immigration.

With that kind of guilty conscience, she’ll fit right into academia in CA where she once was.

"Counterfeiting SSN should be as hard as counterfeiting a $20 bill.

The technology is here today to make SS cards nearly impossible to counterfeit, at least for all practical purposes. We don't have them for a number of reasons, some of which can be blamed on conservatives, libertarians and liberals.

I would take your statement a step further and say that SS cards should be much, much harder to duplicate than a $20 bill. If you copy a twenty, you're only out twenty bucks. But, a counterfeit or stolen SS card creates thousands or perhaps tens of thousands of dollars in damages.

To your larger point, you're absolutely correct. People sneak in because they know they can get jobs in almost every US industry. If that were put to a stop, there wouldn't be any immigration problems, you wouldn't need a multi-billion dollar fence and you probably wouldn't even need a border patrol.

“There were plenty of people here who wanted her to run for pres. Pro abort, pro illegal alien and all.”

Right you are. A lot of FReepers were Condi-worshippers just as they licked Colin Powell's boots before her. Neither of these two ever gave any reason for anyone to believe them to be conservatives. Yet lots of otherwise logical conservatives where ready to anoint either or both of them.

Why?

Source unknown but a cohort told me yesterday that “they” think there are 8,000,000 false Social Security Numbers being used in TEXAS ALONE! That one is hard to believe but if it is 50% right, 25% right or even 10% right it is staggering to me.

I hear ZERO is using one of the numbers from Texas.

One of my deepest regrets is that she was SOS and that she is still running her mouth.

I would vote for the Obamanation to keep any more of those warmed over Democrat type RINO Bush B$@^(*@$^*$ out of the White House.

Bushes lost eastern Europe back to the Commies, Bushes sold our industrial capacity to the Red Chinese, Bushes stood around with their thumbs up their butt an let Mexico invade us.

They stink - from Barbara and Daddy Bush right down to their last offspring.

They are ALMOST the Republican Equivalent of the Kennedys.

I used to respect Condi so much. I was duped.

She is a card carrying member of CFR. They are not to be trusted.

I don’t think you were duped when you respected Condi.

She deserved that respect for the immense amount of learning and work and intelligence she brought to the cabinet table.

She never asked for your vote, so it’s okay to continue to respect her for what she did with her life. You don’t have to feel obligated to stop respecting her if she isn’t 100% in your political corner.

Just because I’m becoming more hard nosed about my politics since Obama doesn’t mean I am going to give up my ability to value good people who aren’t running for office.

Oh puleeeez! Bush didn’t “fail to achieve” anything except full amnesty for 20 million invaders. Otherwise, he completely ignored border security.

Don't push it off on us.

She was born and raised in Alabama and educated in Colorado.

She might be living in Mexico now though.

Condi/Stanford: Ivy league West

They hate Americans just as much as east coast trash.

These elitist bastards never give a damn about our opinions.
