Steele Hammered by Republicans for 'Choice' Slip
Fox News ^ | 3/12/09 | Fox News

A day after a magazine quoted him as saying abortion was "an individual choice," GOP Chairman Michael Steele may soon be toast.

A leading conservative called Steele's remarks in the magazine "cavalier and flippant," underscoring the new chairman's precarious position with party regulars concerned about his off-the-cuff style and penchant for miscues.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee called the remarks "very troubling" and said in a blog posting, "despite his clarification today the party stands to lose many of its members and a great deal of its support in the trenches of grass-roots politics. For Chairman Steele to even infer that taking a life is totally left up to the individual is not only a reversal of Republican policy and principle, but it's a violation of the most basic of human rights -- the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

“Has Bennett gone wobbly?”

When I hear Bennett say things like how he thinks FDR was a great president, I can't help but pigeonhole him alongside Bill Kristol.

The only bad thing about this is, the Democrats will throw the RACE card into the ring.

To them, just what is so wrong with a Black Man who believes in abortion as a “right”? Mark my words, the MSM will rip Conservatives to shreds over this. They already have used Steele's previous slips as leverage against the RNC, Conservatives (Rush) and this one will become a poster child if Steele is recalled as chairman over this issue.

This is a certified nightmare for us. He never should have been picked in the first place. There was ample evidence BEFORE he was nominated that he was a moderate/left RINO and it went ignored, much like what happened when McCain wasted everybody's time, money and effort.

“When I hear Bennett say things like how he thinks FDR was a great president...”

Oops.

Yep. Now that you mention it, I’m trying to remember another remark he made that seemed odd.

Very odd.

Can’t remember now.......

Half of Steele’s problem seems to be that he thinks he needs to be yakking in the media almost every day of the week. RNC Chairmen usually pop up just now and then, and the job has been more administrative than constant PR.

Steele has a very different view of the job, as well as RINO views that continue to split the party further. The party will have to cut its losses sooner or later.

Yep, Steele has to go. He has been nothing but stupid since he became end chairman. I’m no longer a republican but if they got their conservative values back I might come back but it is quite apparent they are no where close to it!

What you’re looking for is called “leadership.” No matter what people thought of Reagan’s policies, what they really appreciated was his leadership skill. He basically said “Here’s what I stand for, vote for me and we’ll go there together.” People respect that. That is why the Contract with America was successful— leadership. Conducting polls to set policy is more “management” in my opinion. There are three types of presidencies, I think: “leadership” presidencies, “management” presidencies, and “transitional” presidencies. I would classify Reagan and Bush 43 as leadership presidencies, Ford and Bush 41 as transitional presidencies, and Carter, Clinton as management presidencies. So far, Obama is the combination of the worst of all three....

Despite being making some stupid comments, Steele has been in office for 6 weeks. His job is to raise money and win elections. And why would he solicit advise from non-Republicans?

What is GOP and what does Republicans or Republican mean?

Why do they ask me for money?

I don’t get the controversy. He said women today can choose to have an abortion or they can choose life. He’s right. How does that translate into him being pro-choice? He has always made it clear that he’s pro-life.

If it HAS to be a mid-Atlantic states African American, how about Lynn Swann? Ran for Governor of PA against Ed Rendell.

So it's a race to see whether he'll headline our GOP state convention in May. LOL! (that's Wisconsin, y'all)

He's trying to out "Howard Dean" Howard Dean.

Very well put. Leadership is more than winning, Obama won, but he's not a leader. It goes so much deeper than that.
