Obama: Economic crisis 'not as bad as we think'

Confronting misgivings, even in his own party, President Barack Obama mounted a stout defense of his blueprint to overhaul the economy Thursday, declaring the national crisis is "not as bad as we think" and his plans will speed recovery. Challenged to provide encouragement as the nation's "confidence builder in chief," Obama said Americans shouldn't be whipsawed by bursts of either bad or good news and he was "highly optimistic" about the long term.

The president's proposals for major health care, energy and education changes in the midst of economic hard times faced skepticism from both Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill, as senators questioned his budget outlook and the deficits it envisions in the middle of the next decade.

But Obama, speaking to top executives of the Business Roundtable, expressed an optimistic vision and called for patience.

Richard Parsons, chairman of beleaguered Citigroup Inc., asked if Obama could offer some help in a national battle "between confidence and fear."

"A smidgen of good news and suddenly everything is doing great. A little bit of bad news and ooohh , we're down on the dumps," Obama said. "And I am obviously an object of this constantly varying assessment. I am the object in chief of this varying assessment."

"I don't think things are ever as good as they say, or ever as bad as they say," Obama added. "Things two years ago were not as good as we thought because there were a lot of underlying weaknesses in the economy. They're not as bad as we think they are now."

When Bush was in office and we had 5% unemployment and an economy which was still growing, it was the worst economy since the great depression. Now the unemployment is skyrocketing and our economy ir shrinking, it is now not as bad as we thing???????

If he was down here where the rubber meets the road, he’d find out real quick that IT IS AS BAD AS WE THINK!

They told him to lie and talk up the economy so he is doing what he was told but only to contradict himself 180 degree from what he has been saying 24/7 for the last 2 years and up to yesterday.

It was a “crisis” when he needed to ram the stimulus through.

Now when he needs to ram trillions of new taxes, cap and trade, and socialized healthcare, he needs to talk up the economy so “naysayers” don’t hamper his grand socialist scam.

For damn near a year now he's been saying it's worse than we thought because President Bush wasn't telling us the truth and now this?
Obama’s got to be the dumbest person on the face of the earth.

"I don't think things are ever as good as they say, or ever as bad as they say," Obama added. "Things two years ago were not as good as we thought because there were a lot of underlying weaknesses in the economy. They're not as bad as we think they are now."

In other words, Obama is a spineless quisling, who doesn't know how, or doesn't care to...take a stand and tell us like it is...OR...in other words, and most realistic...HE HAS NO EARTHLY IDEA WHAT HE IS DOING AS PRES ENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Obama...your village called...they are missing their idiot.

This fool has no idea of what he is doing. Instead of a “$2T Stimulus”, he could cut taxes by $10,000 for every taxpayer. It would be less expensive and boost the economy quicker.
