Indian Ballistic Missile Better than American: DRDO Scientist
Press Trust of India ^ | Mar 9

Posted on 03/12/2009 12:24:48 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Terming the Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC) III anti-missile system as "outdated", top DRDO scientist V K Saraswat said the Indian Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield was better than the American system. "PAC III is an outdated system. Our Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile is 30 per cent superior in terms of range and capability. AAD intercepts at much higher ranges and altitudes compared to PAC III as it has only 15km range for BMD," he told a press conference on the successful test of BMD system on March 6.

On the role of foreign countries in the Air Defence (AD) programme, Saraswat said Russia, Israel and France have provided assistance in areas where DRDO needed help for "bridging technology gap and accelerating technology development." Russia has helped India develop the new Radio Frequency Seeker for the interceptor missile, Israel provided help in developing the 'Swordfish' long-range tracking radar and the French have given the Fire Control System for the BMD.

How do they know it’s better? Have they tested it?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the claims are true.

When you quit building things, and one of your major innovators, (NASA), becomes a whore for a political cause, (global warming), your country is on greased rails toward 2nd or 3rd world status.

Unfortunate, but true.

India conducted a successful test of intercepting an incoming missile at an altitude of 80 km, about 4 days ago.

As per the article, the PAC-3 does intercepts upto 15 km altitude. Can someone verify this?

Also, I would think the Israelis would be able to make a better comparision, since they have worked on both shields.

The PAC III system is still being built.

That’s what I was thinking. The Israels have done extensive work both the Indians and us.

Good, if they can knock them out of the air, we can probably make great big holes out of the launch areas with our satellite surveillance and remote targeting systems.

Either that or huge glass prairies.

Thy were road-mobile and sea-based ones that India used for the test.

Satellites are no good for these, as illustrated when India managed to conduct five nuclear tests in 1998, evading all surveillance satellites.

The PAC III system is still being built.

Our president's promise to defund "all weapons systems which have not proved their efficacy"--in other words, any new weapons system--does not give me a lot of confidence.

It is BS of course, the PAC-3 isn’t even a comparable system, being a significantly smaller and lighter missile designed for terminal intercepts of short range ballistic missiles. 16 MIM-104F missiles can be mounted on one launcher as compared to just one PAD missile, each missile weighing only 312 kg in contrast to the ~ 5000 kg of each PAD missile. If there is one word that can be used to describe the Indians I have had the opportunity to interact with, it would be delusional. Their capacity for self-deception is simply unparalleled. DRDO is a government owned defense/aerospace monopoly, not unlike NASA, which has a history of incompetence, decade long delays, and gratuitously under-delivering on anything it produces while simultaneously promising everything, again not unlike NASA. In sum, it is the apogee of a quasi-socialist bureaucracy whose primary function is to waste time and money coupled with third world braggadocio.

And if there’s one word that I can use to describe the Chicoms here on FR, it’s out right INSECURE. Delusions of your grandeur would be the second word I’d like to use, but I’ll try to stay on the topic.

“In sum, it is the apogee of a quasi-socialist bureaucracy whose primary function is to waste time and money coupled with third world braggadocio.”

Not unlike Chicom-ruled China or any of its ministries and secretariats or SOE’s.

At least they try to do something for themselves, unlike (say) China that just copies a design and then thumps its chest like it did something wondrous! Simply cloning sub-standard stuff copied from the Russians (and recently) the US (even a bloody Humvee) ....good thing the Russians refused to sell to them the SU-33, although the Chinese have probably already stolen the plans. They just needed to have the 2 actual planes to wrap their minds around what they were reading.

Interestingly, the Chinese deem aping and copying things as some sort of virtue. All the fake watches, fake electronics, fake mechanics ....even fake cars and motorcycles. A hallmark of a fake country with very little true innovativeness, but a lot of mirroring and copying.

A nation of technological parrots!
