Durbin: 'Right-Wing' Radio Hosts Wave 'Bloody Shirt' over Broadcast Censorship Thursday, March 12, 2009
Washington (CNSNews.com) Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) told CNSNews.com Tuesday that "right-wing talk radio" hosts are waving a "bloody shirt" when they talk about potential government efforts to diminish the conservative presence on the air waves.
He also said that an amendment he is sponsoring that directs the Federal Communications Commission to promote "diversity" in the ownership of broadcast outlets is nothing new and merely restates longstanding FCC rules.
CNSNews.com asked Durbin: Is the Durbin amendment--what's come to have been called the Durbin Amendment--is that the Democratic leadership's way to regulate conservative talk radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity without reverting to the Fairness Doctrine?
(The Fairness Doctrine was an FCC regulation thrown out during the Reagan administration that said radio stations that discussed controversial issues must allow opposing views to be aired. It effectively stifled the discussion of politics and public policy on the radio, and shows like Rush Limbaugh's did not emerge until after the regulation was repealed.)
Durbins responded by lambasting the conservative talkers: We just had that debate on the floor of the Senate a week or two ago and passed an overwhelmingly bipartisan (amendment) that prohibited the imposition of the Fairness Doctrine.

If you ask me, that was the whole point of villifying Rush. So the American people wouldn’t pitch a fit over the stupid “Fairness Doctrine” or whatever else they want to call it.
Part of reason Rush has elevated the debate to a higher level is self-protection, I think. Apart from his much higher ratings and revenues (and profits), the higher his profile, the more difficult it is for Big Government to shut him up.
He also said that an amendment he is sponsoring that directs the Federal Communications Commission to promote “diversity” in the ownership of broadcast outlets is nothing new and merely restates longstanding FCC rules.
Then there is not need for it, right?
The d’s just cannot contain themselves, it is like they don’t think they have enough time to take full advantage of the Crisis.
“...the higher his profile, the more difficult it is...”
Correct.
Greenberg - dim poller - was just on F&F (talking about his new book). He said of course it was not the same as Rush hoping the o would fail - when serpent head wanted W to fail. The country was not in crisis then (morning of 9/11).
This miserable traitor’s day is coming sooner than he thinks. He has an appointment with destiny.
If it's nothing new, then why restate it, hmmm? Or is this a mandate from the Department of Redundency Department?
That's a great point, and oddly enough I hadn't heard it before.
He is disgusting.
diversity is a sham. When will the sheeple figure this out? We are all AMERICANS. We have a culture, a way of life, and founding principles. Everytime they are divided, we are weaker as a nation. While I am a total supporter of a melting pot mentality, where we welcome all into the fold, for our country to work, only a fool believes that everyone can remain a citizen of their former country and bring their “diversity” to America through legislation.
If you want to come here, great, go through the process and come on in, just remember to leave the citizenship you renounced in your former country. Bring your culture here, and pass it on to your children at HOME. Stop hypenating your country with american. Become a part of the country that was worth leaving your own for. Learn English, the constitution, the culture and the value set. While we are at it, take the liberals to that constitution/bill of rights class with ya!
This bill needs to go to hell just like turdin’s... I mean durbin’s soul!
LLS
Bout the only do well is the Macarina.
Durbin is such a scumbag. THERE, I SAID IT!
You have just put your finger on the cause of most of this countries problems. Until this diversity crap has a stake driven through it’s heart, it will only get worse.
That was my opinion on it from start. I was listening to Rush talk about Saul Alinsky and all that I was thinking “It isn’t about you Rush, it’s about making a villian to justify people accepting limiting conservatism.
Newsweek is helping the cause along with their cover this week.
“He also said that an amendment he is sponsoring that directs the Federal Communications Commission to promote “diversity” in the ownership of broadcast outlets is nothing new and merely restates longstanding FCC rules.”
If that’s true...then, why is he sponsoring additional legislation? If the rules already cover the issue, why does he think we need more legislation?
DhimmiRat insanity, again.
It’s time to take back the country.
Why do we need need Durbin's Amendment then? This is just cover to get the Fairness Doctrine out of the spotlight and allow 'local boards' to do the very thing the Fairness Doctrine was designed to do: Hush Rush. I can see WLS-AM (Rush's affiliate in Chicago) having the the Chicago political machine swamp-monsters come after WLS with a vengeance to take Rush out of the Chicago radio market. When a politician makes a statement like the one above, hold on to our wallet and cling to your guns, religion, and Constitution - they are all under attack.
