In an interview with GQ, Michael Steele called abortion an "individual choice" and said the question should be left to the states.
Quotes from the interview; interviewer's questions in italics:
THE GOOD:
Do you think bipartisanship can work?
No. [pause] Look, Im sorry, I know this is, you know, la-la land and Rodney King time and we all wanna get along, but that is not the nature of American politics. That is not the nature of politics, period.
I dont know if refreshings the word, but to hear someone say bipartisanship doesnt work
It doesnt work! I mean, I understand the ideal of it. But at the end of the day, this is a game of winners and losers. This is zero-sum. Your winning is my losing. My winning is your losing.
[snip]
THE BAD
Do you think homosexuality is a choice?
Oh, no. I dont think Ive ever really subscribed to that view, that you can turn it on and off like a water tap. Um, you know, I think that theres a whole lot that goes into the makeup of an individual that, uh, you just cant simply say, oh, like, Tomorrow morning Im gonna stop being gay. Its like saying, Tomorrow morning Im gonna stop being black.

THE UGLY
Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion? Yeah. I mean, again, I think thats an individual choice.
You do?
Yeah. Absolutely.
Are you saying you dont want to overturn Roe v. Wade?
I think Roe v. Wadeas a legal matter, Roe v. Wade was a wrongly decided matter.
Okay, but if you overturn Roe v. Wade, how do women have the choice you just said they should have?
The states should make that choice. Thats what the choice is. The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide.

my contempt for the bill of rights...lol.
When was the last time the Bill of Rights was actually enforced in this country?
Right now the Bill of Rights,Constitution and The Declaration of Independence are all just nice documents that people can wave around.
I am a firm supporter of our founding fathers, their principles and the core of these documents.
So explain to me when you have nearly 100% of the people in power that do NOT support these goals...how do you get them to change without a civil war?
Sounds to me like you’ve wholly embraced the destruction and the corruption.
Murder is banned in this country, but it still occurs.
Robbery is banned in this country, but it still occurs.
Fraud is banned in this country, but it still occurs.
As long as abortion is decriminalized, people think it's OK to kill their babies because the government sanctions it.
By banning it, the government would show people it's wrong and we would cut down the number of children killed by a large margin.
Sounds like to me that you want to wave a piece of paper in the air and scream and shout that hey you guys are not doing what this piece of papers says...NO FAIR. No solution, answers just rhetoric nonsense.
Meanwhile I am with others doing something about this and trying to find a way to save our Republic and not sit there on glorious principles on a piece of paper that NO ONE in power is abiding by.
The Bill of Rights, etc is useless until we have people in power to respect them. That is what we need to do to fix this problem.
Meanwhile you are arguing with someone on the same side of the core issues with you instead of spending your time hammering against people diametrically opposed to your viewpoint - that is just brilliant. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE CANNOT MUSTER A MAJORITY TO CHANGE THINGS FOR THE BETTER - just like the extreme leftists in this country is ALL what they want or nothing. That is a prescription for corruption and destruction.
Get off your high horse, get real and do something to actually help save this country.
You have no idea what I'm doing. So, you're speaking from ignorance.
By banning it, the government would show people it's wrong and we would cut down the number of children killed by a large margin.
You've almost got it. By having any official policy that leads to the conclusion that abortion is wrong, you're causing the consciences of those that have ALREADY BEEN INVOLVED IN ABORTIONS to bother them.
Romans 2:15
since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.
Actually most of those items are fully supported in this country and in many cases it is rewarded by the same godless people that will NEVER ban abortion.
It is ridiculous how far people will go on this issue on either side. It has nothing to do with what I believe...it has to do with dealing with the corruption in our country FIRST and then getting back to our principles on why this country was formed in the first place.
Until we address corruption nothing else is going to matter. Our Federal government has been completely corrupted and for reason you think the Federal government banning abortion will solve ALL the problems...geesh...look at the laws already on the books that this Administration is subverting...do you actually think that if abortion were banned in this country that a Pelosi/Reid/Obama trifecta would actually ENFORCE the law.
Wake up. Rid this country of the scourge of corruption and we can actually make progress of getting our country back on track - regardless of the laws.
This issue has nothing to do with abortion, gun control, freedom of speech, etc...it is all about corruption.
So you can continue to polarize an otherwise supporting base or you can join in a focus to eliminate corruption. Ultimately a retaking of our country by exposing corruption and eliminating it will get 70-80% of the country behind it but as long as we tote our polarizing issues out in front because you want to make it important (granted I agree on the issue) or we can be smart about how we do this and start working to build a true majority around an issue everyone can get on board with.
This is going to take some time...that is why to get relief sooner on some of these issues - let the states decide.

If anyone should wake up, it's you!
So you don't think killing an innocent is corruption? It's the worst corruption there is.
How can a person who doesn't think baby-killing is corrupt be incorruptible regarding finances or anything else?
Give me a break.
"I wish that you were hot or cold. The lukewarm I will vomit from my mouth!" - Jesus Christ
once again your righteous indignation confuses your perspective and your ability to read simple English sentences.
Once again it would be useless to pass a law in this country that bans abortion. Even if it were on the books Obama/Pelosi/Reid, etc would manipulate the system to NOT enforce the law.
Until we eliminate the corruption in our government it makes absolutely no sense to pass a law that politicians choose not to enforce.
You don’t think we would have “abortion sanctuary” cities popping up ALL over the country.
So let’s review this so it will really sink in:
1) Until we solve the core corruption issues within our government it makes no sense to push any agenda. It will fall on deaf ears if it is outside their view of their anti-American agenda.
2) Once we tar and feather all the scumbags and actually elect responsible, ethical and decent people we can truly affect change.
The entire point of all of this is to get people like you to understand that we can ALL rally around the point of anti-corruption. We would certainly achieve a vast majority in this country right around that one principle. But trying to create a majority in this country given the current state of things around the abortion issue is unfortunately a lost cause.
So do you want to run and around and stomp your feet and continue alienate people or do you want to find an issue that we can rally around and actually drive change. If we elect good ethical people into office discussions around abortion should be a heck of lot more productive than they are today.
But of course you think I support abortion so you think you need to attack...that is exactly why people like you are just not effective with change. We need to find issues that a majority of Americans can get around and get good people into office and that is going to take years to get done.
The other option is push the abortion issue down to the states so that at least in the shorter term you can live in a place that supports your views.
Your other option is to start a civil war where millions of Americans will die.
So keep on the path you are currently on and all your doing is aiding and abetting the very people you despise because they love issues like this that polarize the population. The real trick is to be smarter than that and beat these scumbags at their own game.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
You are missing the point. You polarize on this issue and you lose the war.
You can stand on this principle all you want but when our country completely falls apart which is where we are going you having stood on your principle will mean nothing. There will be NO place on the earth where abortion isn’t allowed.
There will be no state that can pass legislation that meets your view.
We are becoming a godless, communist country with the Manchurian candidate at the helm.
That’s the point. Going after him on abortion is not going to be the winning strategy. Going after our congress and government on corruption is. Every single elected person has their hands dirty. The vast majority of America will get behind an anti-corruption movement.
Let’s fix our country and then let’s fix specific issues.
Michael Steele is hardly prepared to be GOP Chairman. Katon Dawson was a far better choice for a number of reasons. BUT, the party “powers-that-be” have made their choice. And there’s not a chance in hades that Steele will go. Imagine the furor if the Repubs took the position away from an African-American! They’d ALL be racists — we know it. So, that’s NOT going to happen. I guess The Repubs — and the nation — are in for at least 2-4 more years of pain... Hope we survive.
Stopping abortion is about saving innocent lives of innocent pre-born babies. That can not be sold out or shortchanged. It is already polarized by the nature of it: each baby lives or each baby dies.

//////////////////Very well put.
Steele doesn’t not have any steel in his backbone. If a politician can’t articulate why something as simple to understand as killing a baby before it is even born, then he won’t be able to articulate anything else.
He should change his name to MUD.
Saving the lives of innocent babies between conception and birth matters a hell of a lot more than levels of spending.
Those who don’t ‘give a damn’ about protecting babies from being murdered are themselves damned.
No I get the point. I am all for stopping innocent babies from getting killed.
However do you actually think with this administration that those laws would be enforced?
Think about it...right now its a fool’s errand. We need change and then we need the law.
As long as you prop up this issue it will continue polarize and marginalize our ability to achieve a majority. So you play right into their game plan and YOU ultimately lose.
We need to be smarter and we need to WIN.
Yeah, like slavery.
