Report: Bristol Palin and Fiancé Split

The pair, parents to 2-month-old son Tripp, broke up 'a few weeks ago'

Bristol Palin and her fiancé Levi Johnston have broken up, two sources tell PEOPLE.

The split happened "a few weeks ago," according to a source close to the couple, but it's unclear what precipitated it. "It was a mutual thing," adds the source.

"It kind of just happened," says the source, referring to the split. "I thought they would stick it out. But I think they can work together to raise Tripp."

Despite the breakup, Levi still sees the couple's son. Levi's dad, Keith Johnston, told PEOPLE recently that his son is a devoted and "proud father."

Bristol, meanwhile, is attending Wasilla High, taking a class to supplement course work she is completing at home. She also is considering enrolling in college next fall and studying nursing.

I do know that Pope Benedict is foursquare against fornication, in vitro fertilisation and the derogation of the vital importance of the traditional family.

Most importantly, the Church and the Pope are against abortion, something you as a “Catholic” fail to mention.  And I hope you aren't implying that Tripp was conceived through in vitro fertilization

Actually, Jla was pretty close (post 911) to the Pope's sentiment, spoken just less than one year ago, by the way. True Catholics know the Catholic Church, though a sacred and a very strict institution, it also reflects the love of Jesus for everyone, including all those who have fallen or need help.

Yes, the Catholic Church is opposed to artificial insemination, human cloning, genetic testing on embryos before implantation, and embryonic stem-cell research. Indeed, the church considers the different techniques of donating sperm or ovum sinful, this also includes masturbation which is considered gravely immoral.

As we all know the Church opposes having sex outside marriage, and believes that a child should be conceived after marriage. However, Pope Benedict – the Head of the Catholic Church – as a man of faith, has compassion for those who have deviated from the perfect path.

So now let's see what the Pope said on September 10, 2008 about those eeeeeeevil fornicators (since 'fornication' is a word you like to use), and let's find out the position of the Holy Father, shall we?

The Pope prayed for mothers who find themselves alone in the task of educating their children during his pastoral visit to Sardinia.

CAGLIARI, Sardinia (Zenit) - Benedict XVI is asking the Virgin Mary to give special protection to mothers, particularly those that find themselves alone in the task of educating their children. The Pope voiced this petition Sunday before praying the midday Angelus during his pastoral visit to Sardinia, a semi-autonomous Italian island located in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Holy Father first recalled the special attention Popes through the years have given to the island, and particularly to Our Lady of Bonaria, its patron. His visit marked the conclusion of the centenary of the proclamation of the Virgin of Bonaria as patroness of Sardinia.

"How many of my predecessors wished to honor [the Virgin] with particular affection," he said, "Blessed Pius IX decreed her crowning; Saint Pius X, some 100 years ago, proclaimed her patroness of the whole of Sardinia; Pius XI conferred on the new church the title of Minor Basilica; Pius XII, 50 years ago, rendered himself spiritually present here with a special message broadcast live by Vatican Radio, and, in 1960, Blessed John XXIII sent a letter for the reopening of the shrine for worship after its restoration.

"The first Pope to return to the Island after 1,650 years was the Servant of God Paul VI, who visited the shrine on April 24, 1970. And, on Oct. 20, 1985, our beloved John Paul II also paused for prayer before the sacred effigy of Our Lady. In the footsteps of the Popes who preceded me, I have also chosen the Shrine of Bonaria to carry out a pastoral visit that ideally intends to embrace the whole of Sardinia."

The Pontiff went on to note the feast of the birth of the Virgin, celebrated September 8.

"[Her birth] constitutes a fundamental stage for the Family of Nazareth, cradle of our redemption, an event that touches all of us, because every gift that God has given her, the Mother, he has given thinking also of each one of us, her children," he said. "Hence, with immense gratitude, we ask Mary, Mother of the incarnate Word and our Mother, to protect every earthly mother: those that, together with their husbands, educate their children in a harmonious family context, and those that, for so many reasons, find themselves alone in facing such an arduous task.

"May all be able to carry out with dedication and fidelity their daily service in the family, the Church, and society. May Our Lady be sustenance, comfort and hope for all." link

Your posts tell me that you hope that by attacking my orthodoxy you think I’ll back down from my criticism.

I, like the Pope, can very well pray for God’s protection of Bristol and Tripp, without validating the screwed up reasoning, or lack thereof, by which they reached their present circumstance.

That is far from concluding that the Church endorses deliberate single parenthood as the preferred option.

I think the official release that came out of the Palin household was that Bristol is devestated, and that somehow doesn’t seem to have the connotation that it was so mutual. And I’m aware that it’s my assumtion that it probably has alot to do with one of them not being able to handle the responsibility, and Bristol is the one with the child, not the father.

Of course, in my situation the ending of my marriage could be considered mutual, but by no means the result of a mature decision on both sides. I took his behavior until he completely disgusted me to the core and he ran.

Thanks for your civilized response too.

I don’t have the answers. I know what I think would make things better but I only have control over my life and the lives of those in my house. And really, once the kids reach a certain age, they’re going to do what they want, make their own choices. It’s what we hope they do, hope we raised them and did enough for them to be out on their own, making their own decisions.

In addition to being a phony, you are also a whiner.

I'm not attacking you, but I am simply clarifying things for you, because you are deliberately distorting conservatism and Catholicism. Nothing I wrote even remotely suggests that the Church endorses deliberate single parenthood as the preferred option.

That is the Catholic Church I know.

I love and respect Benedict almost as much as his predecessor.

That was a blessing.

Ann Coulter can drop dead. Why would I care what someone who can’t even take care of themselves (you can see it just by looking at her) thinks about how my life has unfolded.

My daughter is happy and well equipped to handle life, and has a far batter chance at success than I ever did. She just turned 22 and me becoming a grandma is nowhere on the horizon. Thank god.

“No person on Earth has ever lived a completely perfect moral life from cradle to grave,”

Great comment/post.

This thread is so helpful and interesting, due to real life testimonies such as yours. I can’t tell you how much your post touches me, and what an inspiration you are. You have truly walked the walk. I prefer walkers over talkers, any day.

Right. So nothing you posted conflicts with anything I have said to this point. But you’re still substituting insult for argument.

People make bad and immoral decisions, and the Church still prays for them. That doesn’t mean the Church endorses the bad and immoral decisions of the people for whom it prays—that being, in the end, all of us.

No, the Church doesn't endorse it, but the Church doesn't attack people who miss the mark, either. Your attacks are insane, totally devoid of compassion, and the fact that the baby is already born make your comments totally uncalled for.

Your mental masturbation on this young woman missteps is sickening.

Do you think that your vicious comments towards her will change what happened? It just shows that your are neither a conservative or a Catholic, but rather just an angry imp which delights in perpetuating the same old hateful mantra.

I think the hot button here was two fold for me. The posts wanting Bristol to put her baby up for adoption (why would anyone want a child to be raised by strangers when their own family is perfectly capable of raising a baby, and punishing a teen for having sex).

It’s not the best case scenario for sure, it never is and never was and it’s happened since the the beginning of time.

Bristol and so many like her, have family that will be a part of the baby’s life. Adoption isn’t the answer in this or many other cases, imo. And, no one is entitled to any one else’s baby ever. It doesn’t matter if they’re infertile or have their own kids and want to adopt. Adoption is wonderful in some cases but not all. We shouldn’t glamorize adoption either. Some of the posts on this thread did call for Bristol and any teen to put their child up for adoption because some so called married couple (and no guarantee that couple will stay married) wants to adopt a baby. Some posts did seem to make it as if adoption is always the best case scenario.

Who is attacking people here?

I see most of the attacks coming from you. I, on the other hand am arguing a principle.

You might try it for a while.

I don’t argue for adoption at any cost, but I do in fact argue that adoption by suitable, committed married parents, when it is possible, is better than deliberate single parenthood, both for the development of the child and for the overall health of society.

I don’t, however, believe that those who disagree with me are moral monsters who must be smitten hip and thigh, unlike others here.

I come from tough stock... from weapons running for the Continental Army, to pionerring the Oklahoma Frontier, to heading west from Ohio during the depression in a model A with 3 kids (one of them my mother) and $500 to California in hope of finding work and starting a new life.

There nothing that can’t be done when you set your mind to it, and governemnt intervention in this process isn’t helpful to society at all.

Oh, you just attack Bristol and Levi, especially Bristol, that's right.

Excuse me, let me remember your insults. Just off the top of my head... perps, fornicators, and the foul stench of condemnation.

Your principle is wrong, leading you to make the wrong conclusions.
