You misunderstood me, I didn't say they weren't required to get the specialty training for their branch or associated schools, just that since WWII thru to Vietnam, the guard and reserves were rarely called to combat. It was considered safe haven. Well, relatively safe. That's why Dan Quayle's guard service during Vietnam brought down so much fire from the msm. Same for GWB. It wasn't until Desert Storm and then post Sept 11th that the guard and reserve took on extended combat tours.

By the way Reserves and Guard accounted for almost 6000 dead during the Vietnam war, I think that is greater than the Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, Grenada, Beirut and Panama death toll of Active, Reserves, and Guard combined. I believe their role in Korea was quite large but it is hard to pin down the numbers.
