Why Not Tax 20% of the Illegal Wages Going to Mexico Via Money Orders?
3-10-2009 | Robert A Cook

We are told that most of the money earned here by illegal aliens is sent back to Mexico (primarily), and is the source of billions of dollars of the Mexican economy. Much, much less goes to other south American and central American countries, but 80+ percent is to Mexico.

If the money now sent to Mexico via money orders was taxed at 20%, and each transaction had a SSN attached for the sender to claim when "he" filed his taxes, then the "cash economy" now supporting illegals would be discouraged. The "cash" paid to illegals might still be laundered and transferred - evil has ways of doing anything! - but at least it would make collecting some tax money now illegally skipped processed.

If they have a legitimate SSN (or tax ID number) then the Mexicans here working and sending their money back to family in Mexico would get the refund at the end of the year when they file taxes. If they file ... Har, Har.

If they don't file at the end of the year? No refund of the difference.

If ten thousand (or two million) illegal aliens use the same SSN, then the IRS can sort out who gets the correct 1500.00 back. And the remaining 20,000,000.00 goes to pay back the illegal's charges on the rest of us who DO pay.

The notion of taxing outbound capital — whether from Mexican workers or corporations investing abroad — is exceptionally dangerous. Capital controls will give the socialist administration one more tool to persecute those who would ‘vote with their feet’ against socialism by moving assets to more tax friendly jurisdictions. Foreign capital, which is a mainstay of our equity and debt markets, would vanish overnight. This is a very bad idea!

I think it was Milton Friedman who wrote, “economic authoritarianism is one step to totalitarianism.”

Totally agree. Should they not be filing taxes, then, taxes will be deemed paid.

Should they be filing, then the withholding could be accounted for and everyone will be both happy and legal.

Everyone should pay a relatively equal amount to be part of the "Dance".

Why not just institute the fair tax. Everything the illegal tax avoider buys here in the states will be taxed at the cash register. While that doesn’t help tax outbound capital, the illegals in the society do spend while here.
