CBS) In Phoenix Monday, a gun dealer went on trial for supplying assault rifles to Mexican drug gangs who are locked in a bloody war with authorities -- and each other. CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports on a case that's being watched closely in both the United States, and in Mexico.
In the escalating drug war south of the border, Mexican cartels supply the drugs, but the guns largely come from the United States.
"Firearms trafficking to Mexico is a huge problem," says Phoenix ATF agent William Newell. "Drugs go north, guns come south."
George Iknadosian is accused of being a top gun-supplier. When government agents raided his Phoenix gun shop last May, they found hundreds of weapons allegedly destined for Mexico. He's now on trial, accused of knowingly selling more than 700 guns to so-called straw buyers - U.S. citizens who buy the guns legally and then turn them over to a trafficker.
"They get $100 for their trouble, and the trafficker will take the gun down to Mexico and sell it for exponentially more than they pay here," says ATF agent Peter Forcelli.
As many as 2,000 firearms are believed to cross the border into Mexico every day. And they are often assault weapons, Tracy reports.

Actually, the Clinton Administration using Chinese suppliers provided the bulk of the weaponry currently being used by gang members in our cities.
It is Armenian. He should stick to selling rugs...or sports broadcasting. :0)
It's hard to believe ANYTHING the ATF alleges is true anymore. Something about this story stinks.
If he knowingly sold guns to cartels throw the book at him. No way in hell this should justify disarming law-abiding citizens though. What this shows is the contempt criminals have for existing gun laws, nothing else.
Ping!
His real crime was probably selling SKSs or AKs or AR-15s, which the ATF doesn't want him to do. Or anyone else. So they look around for one of dozens or hundreds he sold that ended up in bad hands, not even from him, but after a subsequent sale, and then drum up something RICO-able.
Hopefully these informants were wired and there will be no doubt about what the owner was or was not involved in.
Anybody have a copy of the affidavit?
believe what you like, it has been well documented for years that the muzzies have been supplying arms to the drug cartels while the drug cartels have been supplying drugs to the muzzies...

Sounds like the same problem as the anti-gun US states and towns, like NYC, have. To STOP the importation of smuggled guns, LEGALIZE them locally! DUMMIES!!
Yes! The Wall is the answer! BUILD THE WALL! If you build it they WON’T come!
I figured the Mussies had a hand in this somewhere seeing that
beheading isn’t a normal execution style around here.
Obama, we know how tired you must be. Every night parties are killers but
Obama, get off your a** and do something about the frickin’ borders.
Obama, we realize that your friends/voters/future voters are far more important to you and your power grab then the lives of many innocents who are going to be (some already have) gotten caught in the middle of this war, but eventually you and your elites will not be able to set on your temporary thrones and escape these scum just as the rest of us won’t be able to.
ATF umm nope they would not be the ones out there making sure the second amendment is protected. If a sale does not pass the background check then it should be halted. Otherwise what’s the problem. Before worrying about gun transfers to Mexican thugs, maybe the gubmint can worry about those thugs being here in the first place. Just don’t let them come in.
According to other reports, Iknadosian is a native of Egypt.
Sounds Armenian so more likely Christian.
With BATFE making the accusations, that more than slightly unlikely, given their past record in truth telling.
