Chuck Todd at First Read flags up some fascinating comments from Vice-President Biden on his visit to Nato:
“5 percent of the Taliban is incorrigible, not susceptible to anything other than being defeated. Another 25 percent or so are not quite sure, in my view, the intensity of their commitment to the insurgency. And roughly 70 percent are involved because of the money, because of them being -- getting paid.”
Biden goes onto say that the “idea of what concessions would be made is well beyond the scope of my being able to answer, except to say that whatever is initiated will have to be ultimately initiated by the Afghan government, and will have to be such that it would not undermine a legitimate Afghan government.”
Any successful strategy in Afghanistan is going to have to aim to peel off those members of the Taliban who are persuadable. But it is interesting, and important, that Biden makes clear that the Afghan government--not the Americans or Nato--will be in the lead on this.

Well I can believe a rather small amount are there primarily for money. Like maybe 2-3 percent.
I believe at least 50% are unreachable and are not changeable. Biden’s “5” needs at least a zero behind it.
I believe a very small number may be there because they are being blackmailed to be there (threats to family, etc) and they have some expertise or abilities they want to exploit. I believe some are there because they think being on that side is better than having the Taliban go after them.
But I believe most of them are there because they want to be there and because of their beliefs on Islam.
Biden shows he (like most western libs) don’t understand the mideast muslim mindset. He thinks it’s about money and disenfranchisement rather than fundamental evil people. Just like how they deal with criminals here.
Is Obama really that stupid, or is he really a an Islamic terrorist on an inside job??

Says who? This reminds me of the claim years ago that there were 10,000,000 homeless in America.
Eventually the claim was tracked back to an advocate for the homeless who admitted he made it up and the 10,000,000 figure sounded cool and serious.

It's about OPIUM. And the Taliban who are ok with the opium trade are fine with Obama. He only wants to get rid of the zealots who were cutting off farmer's hands in 2000 to reduce opium production to zero.
