Obama Aims to Shield Science From Politics

When President Obama lifts restrictions on funding for human embryonic stem cell research today, he will also issue a presidential memorandum aimed at insulating scientific decisions across the federal government from political influence, officials said yesterday.

"The president believes that it's particularly important to sign this memorandum so that we can put science and technology back at the heart of pursuing a broad range of national goals," Melody C. Barnes, director of Obama's Domestic Policy Council, told reporters during a telephone briefing yesterday.

Although officials would not go into details, the memorandum will order the Office of Science and Technology Policy to "assure a number of effective standards and practices that will help our society feel that we have the highest-quality individuals carrying out scientific jobs and that information is shared with the public," said Harold Varmus, who co-chairs Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

And speaking of ‘science’.

Tom McClintock, CA congressman spoke at a climate change forum and said those who deny global warming are traitors.

What a disappointment from this man.

Wish it was only “BULL”....

It shuts out dissent from GW, and other articles-of-faith junk science simply by claiming it is ‘political’....

Obama aims to continue marching left at the fastest pace possible. It’s going to be a long 22 months.

The only way to “insulate science from the government” is to have the government stop paying scientists.

A president stepping back from an issue and asking private businesses to do the research -- this is "playing politics".

A president throwing money at the issue and picking some companies to receive that money over others, and providing resources for this medical area rather than that medical area -- this is "shielding science from politics".

Please re-calibrate your decoder rings.

There's no morality involved with the policy choice.

To liberals their god is government and abortion is their sacrament.

It's a death cult.

The Lord will repay.

Meanwhile John CONyers is pushing a bill that would effectively silence communication among scientists doing research.

Arguably, Joseph Mengele’s experiments represented the triumph of “pure science” over “political ideology.”

Some would argue that the findings in the book “The Bell Curve” are “pure science,” and that Martin Luther King’s civil rights struggle was sacrificing such science to “political ideology.”

I’m happy to stand with the unscientific dullards on these types of issues.

I agree- both in what the administration lied about and about how the writer slanted the story.
BOTH are scum.

Stupid question perhaps, but when has science ever been free from politics? Government is so heavily involved in promoting and funding research that it always determines what is or is not researched and published. This is just a smokescreen to pretend that controversial positions involving science are to be regarded as automatically valid rather than suspect due to politics.
